Ibanez RG350DX: Owen O'Malley Is Not Dave Navarro
Try to briefly mentally disassociate Ibanez guitars and metal music because the RG350DX proves that it can handle more than just treble-heavy thrashing. That's not to say you can't use it for your metal escapades, but as Owen O'Malley shows off, the Ibanez RG350DX is actually a pretty versatile guitar.
Plus, you can do dive bombs, and there just aren't enough dive bombs in popular music today.

OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley, and this is the Ibanez RG350DX, part of the famed Ibanez RG series. It is a pretty inexpensive guitar, squeaky like Ibanezes get, but it's got this licensed Floyd Rose tremolo which, you know, sometimes you want to be wary of in lower priced guitars because the more give a tremolo has, the harder it is to keep the guitar in tune. But this does have the locking nut up at the top, so once you get your strings sort of close to where you want them to be, you lock them down with the little included Allen key, and then it's got these fine tuners in the back to sort of actually bring it up to exact tune. It helps a lot. You will be tuning a lot though with this guitar. That said, it's a pretty awesome guitar, especially for the price. The neck is very fast, the setup is very good for this price range, and it's got these three pickups. It's got two -- or actually rather it's got one INF4 humbucker in the bridge, one INF3, Infinity 3, in the neck position, and then a single coil INFS3 in the middle position, and it's got a five-position selector switch, master volume, and master tone. So, a pretty simple control layout but a lot of tonal variety for this guitar. We were just listening to the bridge pickup.

Let's listen to the neck pickup.

The neck just plays super awesome above the 12th fret. It's really pretty phenomenal setup. And we've got this single coil in the middle here.

So this is really, it's not just a metal guitar. You know, Ibanezes are usually associated with like speed metal, hard rock, but it's really not just that, and there's also these weird sort of in-betweeny like Strat but sort of not because there's a humbucker...,
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX]
...weird sort of like rhythmy tones.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX]
Let's listen to it on clean just to hear what the pickups sound like without any distortion.

So, this is the bridge pickup right here, the bridge humbucker.

Let's listen to the neck pickup.

Let's listen to the middle pickup here.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, SINGLE COIL]
You hear quite a big difference in output. It is a single coil with a very, very different tone.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, SINGLE COIL]
And now, let's listen to those sort of middle position.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, MIDDLE POSITION]
Sort of really good funk tones in the middle position there.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, MIDDLE POSITION]
Pretty decent like jazzy tones too, so there's a lot of versatility to this guitar. [STRUMS GUITAR] Let's just check out this Floyd Rose here and see how low it can go.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, TESTING OUT FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO BRIDGE]
It's a little bit out of tune now.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, TESTING OUT FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO BRIDGE]
It's a little bit more out of tune.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, TESTING OUT FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO BRIDGE]
Anyway, that's kind of how, if you've ever listened to Jane's Addiction, how Dave Navarro kind of gets that sort of motorcycle revving up sound is actually he played an old RG when he was recording with Jane's.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, TESTING OUT FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO BRIDGE]
Something like that. I can't do it exactly but that's basically the idea. It just gets super low.
[OWEN O'MALLEY PLAYING THE IBANEZ RG350DX, TESTING OUT FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO BRIDGE]
You can do fun effects stuff. It really does have quite a bit of travel on this tremolo here.
So that was the Ibanez RG350DX, a pretty great guitar for the money, pretty inexpensive, and it's a great setup and some decent sounding pickups. What more could you ask for? You've been watching Gearwire.Com. I'm Owen O'Malley. See you later. You, see you later.

Not Licenced Floyd Rose, but Ibanez Edge III...
once again
I am mistaken about an Ibanez. The Edge III is pretty stable for a locking vibrato.
