Ibanez SR700 Bass: Unlike The SR71 Blackbird, The Ibanez SR-Series Basses Are Here To Stay

September 17, 2008
Ibanez SR700 Walkthru

Six-string-slinger J. Irving-Giles transposes his chops down two octaves to tackle the Ibanez SR700, an electric bass that plays like a shredder's guitar. Aside from featuring a flame maple top and superfast 24 fret neck, the SR700 boasts a pair of Bartonlini MK1-4 active soapbars running through a Bartolini MK1 3-band EQ. All this for about $700, retail.

Mr. Irving-Giles is playing those alt-metal-worthy licks through a Fender Rumble 100, and gets an impressive piano-like tone with a pick. Dang those are nice pickups.

J. IRVING-GILES: Hi. I'm J. Irving-Giles with Gearwire.Com, and I've got strapped on me right here the Ibanez SR700 Bass. It's part of the Soundgear series which has been around for just over 20 years now, which is quite the run, and judging from this bass, and there's a good reason for it. It’s a really nice bass here. It's got Bartolini pickups in here. There's the MK1 for us and also the MK1 three-band EQ system just right here on the bass. You've got the treble, mid, and bass controls, and with the pickups you've got a blend knob that it's not really a selector. You just blend between one and the other.

This bass has got a figured maple top on a mahogany body, and the neck is bubinga, and it's just a really thin lightweight bass. It just feels really sleek, and it's just got a really nice tone to it. So, I'm just going to noodle around on the bass a little bit and give you an idea. I have the pickup selector all the way down towards the bridge first.

Then I'll move it up all the way towards the neck.

Put this in the middle, it just boosts the bass a bit.

And on the opposite end, knock the treble up.

All right, so as you can see it's capable of a wide range of tone just from the bass controls alone, not even configuring with the amp. So, I'd say it's a really nice bass. I mean the best part about it is probably just the feel of it. The neck is very smooth. Ibanez is great with smooth necks, and it's just a good bass for fast action, just a lot of movement. And it's the Ibanez SR700.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
