Ibanez SR7VIISC Bass Guitar: Will You Bravely Sail The Seven Strings?

January 20, 2009
Ibanez SR7VIISC Bass Guitar Demo Winter NAMM

The noisy Winter NAMM Exhibitor's Hall isn't the best place, necessarily, to audiotion a new instrument, but when some thing like the Ibanez SR7VIISC seven-string bass guitar catches your eye, you take what you can. . . at least Owen O'Malley does.

The SR7VIISC wasn't necessarily the centerpiece of the Ibanez NAMM presence, but it certainly turned a few heads with its hybrid string intervals and unique Seymour Duncan pickups and active EQ.

OWEN O'MALLEY: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. We're at Winter NAMM 2009 in Anaheim, and this is the Ibanez SR7 -- it's called the SR7VIISC, and it's this kind of crazy hybrid between -- it's almost like the Fender Bass VI plus a low B because we have got seven strings here. It goes from a low B to an E which is basically like two octaves below what you have on a guitar.

It's guitar tuning so you can actually play guitar chords on the top, and then you also got this low B, so really it's kinda like tuned like a seven-string guitar but in the bass register. It's got a lot of controls here. There's a three-way pickup selector. There's also the volume pot here; it's a push-pull pot so there's a coil tap on this humbucker here. It looks like these are Duncan-designed pickups. It's got a three-band active EQ with a sweepable midrange here.

It lists for -- well, right here we're going to see -- 2,133 dollars and 32 cents. That's very important, the 32 cents right there, so the street price is going to be a little bit less, probably around the 2-grand mark. Crazy, craziness!
