Unless you're emotionally attached to those overflowing three-ring binders full of top-40 covers, you'll be pretty psyched about the new i-Tab. The i-Tab is the world's first portable guitar tablature e-reader, a pocket-sized device that scrolls chords and lyrics and allows users to download backing tracks and more from a giant, legal library of tabs.

Mouting on your guitar's headstock, the i-Tab mounts for convenient, if not inconspicuous, viewing during performance. The rate of scroll is adjustble, and this and other parameters are easily accessed and changed via the unit's 5-inch touchscreen.

The i-Tab boasts a 4GB memory, i.e., you'd never be able to carry the equivalent paper tablature to a gig, no matter how anal and organized you were. There are also video learning modules for beginners that you can download and play right on the i-Tab -- sort of like having music books and lessons a standard neck-scale-length away at all times.

The i-tab has a built-in speaker in addition to its headphone output, and includes headphones, a stylus, USB connector, power charger, and soft carry pouch. It also includes TV out leads so you can play synchronized chords, lyrics and backing tracks through the player or through a television. Did someone say acoustic guitar karaoke night at my place? Oh, it was me.

The first 30 tabs are free and include songs by U2, Oasis, Rolling Stones, and others.

The i-Tab will set you back $199, with pricing for additional individual tabs TBA. I-Tab says to expect the unit to hit stores by April.
