J Design started making cabinets and accoutrements up in 2002.

"I started building cabinets back in 2002. It just kind-of evolved into a business right after my first daughter was born. In 2003, I took over the cabinet building for my brother's amp company, Fargen Amplification," says Jeff Earl, the man behind J Design. "We have always worked well together and I think it shows in the products. I build for a few other amp manufacturers as well. I do some tweed cabinets and some Marshall style cabinets for other amp builders. It's just alot of fun."

And if you are one of those folks who like to tinker with your cabinets, J Design have something for you, the J Design Add-A-Baffle. The Add-A-Baffle is a cleverly designed adaptor plate that lets you mix and match different speaker sizes in your cabinets without making permanent changes to speaker cabinets or baffles. It is made in various sizes to suit every standard guitar speaker size.

"The Add-A-Baffle is really cool because say you have a 2x12 speaker cabinet and want a bit more high end sparkle or a bit less bottom end. You can remove one of the 12s and install the Add-A-Baffle with any 10-inch speaker that you like," says Earl. "It also works in, say, a 15-inch speaker cabinet if you want to install a 12-inch speaker, a 10-inch speaker or even two eight-inch speakers. The cabinets just need to be rear speaker loading."

The idea for the Add-A-Bafle came to him a few years ago while testing speakers for his various cabinet models.

"I had purchased around 20 different style 8-, 10-, 12- and 15-inch speakers and needed a way to test them in a few cabinets that I use frequently," he says. "A couple of months later, I unveiled the Add-A-Baffle at an Amp Show in the L.A. area, and everyone was blown away at how easy they were to install. Four screws and you have a completely new tone. I sold out the first day."

You can get a J Design Add-A-Baffle for $40 (plus $10 shipping) or two for $70. They come in any size from six to 15 inches.
