JKG Model 21: Jon Kammerer's Handcrafted Guitars
The result is something kinda crafty, kinda Art Noveau. Grab your glass of merlot and take a look at the Gearwire video.
ROB WARMOWSKI: Hey everybody. It’s Rob Warmowski at the Chicago Guitar Show for Gearwire.com and I’m here with Jon Kammerer of JKG Guitars, Kammerer Guitars. How are you doing, Jon?
JON KAMMERER: I’m doing fine, Rob. Thank you.
ROB WARMOWSKI: Jon is going to show us some really interesting designs. His acoustic guitar that he’s holding in his hand, what model is this?
JON KAMMERER: This one here is it’s actually a model 21. I don’t have model names for my guitars, but specifically what this one is designed to do is to he a true stage acoustic. Most acoustic guitars operate like a bellows to pump air to provide the sound. The problem is the low frequencies tend to feed back, but this guitar, with the top plate isolated out, it doesn’t develop that pumping motion and you’re less prone to feedback when you’re plugged in.
ROB WARMOWSKI: That’s very interesting. So basically, the sounding surface of the guitar has been sort of separated from the rest of the body. Am I understanding that right?
JON KAMMERER: Yeah. That is correct.
ROB WARMOWSKI: And what kind of a -- Is there a pickup in this?
JON KAMMERER: There is an active pickup system. It’s an L. R. Baggs Element transducer, and it has a volume control which is tucked in right under the sound hole there.
ROB WARMOWSKI: That’s very interesting. Now, in a retail price, roughly how much would this guitar run?
JON KAMMERER: This particular guitar as configured would list at about $2,600 and the case is included for that.
ROB WARMOWSKI: Case is included. What woods are we looking at here?
JON KAMMERER: This one is an ash guitar with a Pao Ferro fretboard and abalone fret markers.
ROB WARMOWSKI: Would you mind playing a little bit?
JON KAMMERER: Uh, not right now.
ROB WARMOWSKI: Okay. He doesn’t want to play his own guitar. He’s got stage fright. It’s understandable. He’s got too much to do. He has to dream up the designs, execute the designs, fine tune, but that’s okay. We’re going to move on to a couple of other JKG guitars in other Gearwire videos so keep it on Gearwire.Com.
