KEL Audio HM-7U Talks Trash
We don't normally associate Canadians with aggressive trash talking and competitive mockery, but KEL audio has brought the pain with the release of their new HM7-U large diaphragm condenser microphone:
". . . some mic makers try to sell cheap tube mics that LOOK like a U-47 but miss the mark -- and for all the usual reasons . . . junky transformers that destroy the low end, inconsistent too-bright capsules, horrible microphonic tubes and gritty ceramic capacitors."
Oh, SNAP! Did you HEAR THAT, other microphone manufacturers? KEL just called you OUT! What are you gonna say about them, huh?
There's probably not much you can say to the HM-7U's class 'A', dual transformerless FET circuit, which, paired with the K47-syle capsule and WIMA film capacitors for a thoroughly high-quality signal path, can lay claim to all the bragging rights it wants. Your momma.
As if this build-quality weren't enough to warrant a glut of smack talk, the KEL HM-7U also sports a low-cut filter, a bright-blue phatom power LED for question-free operation, and a -10db pad, which makes the HM-7U suitable for kick drum and guitar cab mic'ing, as well as the expected vocals, woodwinds, acoustic guitars and drum overheads.
Hey, other microphone manufacturers, yo' large diaphragm condenser mic so thin-sounding, I've been using its reproduced audio to hold my triple-decker turkey club together.

Kel Audio HM 7U
The Kel Audio HM 7U is a great mic. I have been in radio for over 30 years and do free-lance voice-overs from my home studio. I have used just about every mic ever made and I think the HM 7U is as good as it gets. It's clean, clear and warm and isn't at all sibilant. I compared it with a Neumann TLM 103 and couldn't believe how much better the HM 7U sounded. You'd think it was a $4,000 mic. If you need more than one polar pattern this might not be the mic for you as it only has one tight cardiod pattern but it is all I need. There is also a low cut filter that I found works quite well and a 6db pad for extra loud sources. I haven't used that and probably won't ever need to but it's there. I also like the blue led that tells you the phantom power is on. I have forgotten to power off my mic so many times in the past but with this light on the HM 7U I don't do that anymore. I don't think there is another mic out there that can touch the HM 7U for the price.
