Korg Electribe EMX-1: Making A Beat Your Own By Adding A Bass
In DJ Puzzle's final video with the Korg Electribe EMX-1 (click here for the first part), he adds his own bassline in order to turn a preset beat into something he created. Puzzle then gets up close and personal with the modulation section to show you how to add a bit of flavor to your sound.

JASON DONNELLY: This is Jason Donnelly here once again with the Korg EMX-1, the Electribe groove box by Korg. In the previous segments, I showed you how to take a preexisting preset pattern, copy it to a user pattern, and then alter it to your liking. We took the drum beat and customized it, totally cleared out the synth parts. And now to complete this tutorial, I’d like to show you how to lay down your own bass line.
So, press the part number 1. We’re in part edit mode by the way. Make sure your part edit mode is selected, and will light up. Press [SOUNDS LIKE] syn part 1.

It is the sound that we have. I’m looking for a better bass tone I’m not quite happy with that one. I’ll change up the waveform.

Cool. This is a square waveform. It’s just got that kind of U.K. garage feel to it. Here’s our beat.
[JASON DONNELLY PLAYING BACK PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
We test the bass tone over the beat.

Okay. So I like that. Simply -- What you do is hit the back button to start from the beginning of the pattern, press the record button. It’s now waiting. I’m going to press play. Recording will be activated. So, I’m going to perform this. Actually, I’m going to do this live. I can show you how to do it in the step sequencer later on but I’m going to play this in live. That’s my preference. It’s up to you. It depends on what’s easiest for you in choosing to play live. Here we go.

[JASON DONNELLY PLAYING BACK PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
So, this is sort of a rough draft. A simple bass line. What I’m going to do here is I’m going to master the LFO, and I’m going to change up the tone of this bass to give it a little bit of warbly effect.

Using the oscillator edit.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
Give it a little bit of a warbling effect.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
I’m going to change the waveform type.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
So, you can hear the difference in the sound.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
We can kind of fatten the bass with the tone up a little bit. There’s also a filter cutoff...,

...amp...,
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
...and panning we’ll leave. This is your pitch.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
And so, I wasn’t in the proper mode to record knob movement, and I actually don’t want to do that. I just wanted to alter the sound so that it’ll stay that way throughout the sequence.
Changing up the bass tone is quite simple by using the modulation. You got your oscillator 1 and 2, cutoff from the filter, amp, panning, and then the different waveforms and your speed. Your oscillator you can also BPM sync. So, let’s give that a listen.

So now we’re in pitch mode.

Amp.
[JASON DONNELLY MODIFYING SYNTH BASS LINE OVER PATTERN IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE EMX-1]
Musically really quiet, really loud. That’s right. Panning would be left and right. Different waveform selections here, your oscillator speed.

You can use your BPM sync, sync the oscillator 2 BPM.

So it’s like you can simply and quickly modulate the bass tone and change it up real quick. Jason Donnelly here with Gearwire.Com. Thanks for watching.

And so there you have it. It basically started with a preset beat, changed it up, and laid down our own bass line right here in a matter of minutes. What a great piece, the Korg Electribe EMX-1. This is Jason Donnelly with Gearwire.Com. Thanks for watching.
