Korg Electribe ESX1: Scribe Is To Scrivener As Electribe Is To . . .
Wanna become a master Electrivener? Dig this Korg ESX1 Electribe walkthru, courtesy of William The Electrivener Holland. In this first of three videos on this dance machine, Bill goes through the basic control layouts and effects options, all while single-handedly resurrecting Eurodisco as a viable art form. The on-board synth, sweet effects and handy ribbon controller all make this unit far more flexible than your basic drum machine

BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. My name is Bill Holland, and this is the Korg Electribe SX, part one of two videos, mainly because it’s a pretty complicated interface. There’s a lot here and I want to go through the ins and outs of how this works. First of all, you’ll notice we have our transport controls here, a reverse, record, control, stop, and play.

Tap tempo.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING WITH THE KORG ELECTRIBE ESX1]
And I can hold down that tempo and use the knob and send the tempo back up.

Now, we also have our drum parts right here.
[BILL HOLLAND AUDITIONING DRUM PARTS IN THE THE KORG ELECTRIBE ESX1]
Here I have a basic 909 kit laid out, and what I can do is I can preview it here and then I can actually sequence my drum down here, so like right now I have.

If I go up to the next pattern, see I select my drum.

And what I can do is select those patches individually. There’s also the keyboard part. These are selected by 1 and 2.

Now, unlike the MX -- normally in the MX I have a lot more key options. Here I only have two. Keep that in mind.

These can either be the synths that are already in the machine or you can bring your own in. You can bring your own samples.

Notice how I can play it here like a keyboard or I can play a chord and then hit the arpeggiator.

Now, on the drum parts, we also have a stretch part. This is a loop or a sample that you put in and then you can time stretch it.

Okay. Now, my slice is a lot like a REX file.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING LOOP SLICE IN THE KORG ELECTRIBE ESX1]
And I can actually set the slices for that by going here and deciding what from that is let through.

You’ll see I have part, mute, and solo up here. I can solo that real quick.

And then I can also decide the decay time...

Then we have our effects. You’ll notice we have a range of things including a ring modulator...,
