Korg MicroX: Does It Really Have Mutant Powers?
Aside from the wide variety of sounds (over 1,100) and the arpeggiators, one of the cooler features of the microX is its ability to control as many as 12 different parameters on DAW applications like Cubase and ProTools, as well as on hardware effects modules and software synths.
The microX also allows the user to combine the sounds of up to eight different programs at a time, which, we're told, can help you create some pretty unusual types of racket. On the portability front, the microX weighs under six pounds and measures less than two feet across, so it's perfect for, you know, attaching to utility belts or mounting on jet packs.
KORG REPRESENTATIVE: So what we've got here is a strange little beast indeed. It is much more than meets the eye. What you see on the onset is a 25-note velocity sensitive keyboard, a click point interface, four control knobs, a bright red screen that is very easy to read. It has very low dispersion so when it's right next to a computer monitor, you're going to get a great viewing angle. So let's hear some of the sounds.

As on every Korg keyboard, when you grab a control it's already programmed to do something amazing.

The sounds you're hearing are both the 32-MB classic Triton wave ROM in its entirety and an additional 32 MB of brand-new sounds.

Great new drum kits in here as well.

And never want to skimp on an orchestra patch, here we go.

So, it's an awesome synth, but above and beyond that it is totally ready to hook up to your computer and increase your music making potential. There's a button here called external controller. If I light that guy up, my four knobs that have three functions each are now pre-assigned MIDI controls. On the screen, I'm scrolling through templates. I've got Stylist, Trilogy, Reason, Live. These are all software synthesizers that are very popular. Micro X already comes with the ability to play these synths. Just call up the template and you're ready to go.
It also comes with templates for control over your favorite DAW software, so you call up Logic, Cubase, Sonar, and you're ready to go. You've also got the USB port over here that leads to the computer which has, again the bundled editor-librarian software. Run it as a plugin, save your song, the Micro X stuff is saved in there as well.
So, it's portable, it's powerful, it sounds great, and it's incredibly flexible. That is the Micro X from Korg. Thanks very much for watching.
