Korg MR-2000S OS Upgrade Meets User Requests Halfway
The release of the Korg MR-2000S DSD recorder was very well received, but the addition of a heavily-requested new feature that lets you capture more than two tracks at its impressive audio quality would really add a feather to the machines cap. At Winter NAMM 2009, Korg doesn't announce the addition of this ability -- more of a compromising remedy that allows you to link multiple MR-2000S units thanks to an upcoming OS Upgrade.
To provide this capability, Korg turns the S/PDIF digital I/O into your link point as this I/O pair is inactive during recording and playback in DSD format. Using these ports, the update develops a synchronization protocol with transport control commands and word-clock communication for as many as four units, designating your pick as a master unit with three units slaved to it to work as one well oiled machine made out of four well oiled machines.
This opens up a plethora of possibilities, the most obvious of which being the simultaneous recording of eight audio tracks during live applications. This OS is also update for four-track "live in studio" sessions for impressively fast turnaround from tracking to mastering.
Finally, the update would be ideal for users looking to preserve what Korg calls "stems" in a future-proof format, capturing high resolution foley and sound effects and, if you're imaginative, a whole lot more. Keep an eye out for it. Keep two!
