Korg R3: Be Thankful For Full Sized Keys
Join Gearwire's Bill Holland and Korg's R3 for this walkthru where we take a peek at the main panel pluses packed on this petite synthesizer with pleasingly playable keys. Bill plays some popular patches that have been preset in a "favorites" section.

BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. My name is Bill Holland, and we are looking at -- And we are looking at the Korg R3 vocoder/synthesizer. You'l notice the mic here that I was using, and we're going to walk through some of the basic features of this synth. First of all, see the vocoder mic, we have a basic keyboard.

The value control knobs, the page select editing knob for editing all of your parameters and four knobs per each page that help assign filters, oscillators and other values that you need to assign. If you want to know what they are, the page menu program is located right here. You'll notice it's 1 through 2 are voice unison, 3 through 4 are pitch, 5 through 6 are oscillators 1 and 2, 7 is mixer, you have filters and drive, LFOs, patches, mod sequencing, arpeggiator, and then your vocoder controls and also global controls, so there's a wide range of things that you can do with this. Notice that the knob here controls which bank you are selecting. Each bank has eight different patches which can be selected here. In this case, we're going to start with favorites. Favorite patch 1

Pretty much a selection of patches that are probably the most popular out of the ones that they helped create for the synth.

This one has a kind of sample built in to it so it has sort of a vocoder thing going on. You can listen to hear the voice a little bit.

We also have basses.

They range from all sorts of different types of vintage and modern bass.

Something there for a little more drum & bass sound. C lead. These are lead synthesizers.

We have different types within that. Check your different programs.

Poly synths, and these has a wide range of high-polyphony chord based synthesizers.

And all of these can be controlled using the knobs over here. Usually, it defaults to a cutoff, resonance, and detune control. Listen. If I run the cutoff with this.

Then we have regular keyboards, bank F, and this has anything ranging from an electric piano...
