Korg R3: Bill Holland Takes It To The Banks
Have you ever wondered how goofy your "vocoder voice" sounds when it's not being run through a vocoder? Now you don't have to. Bill Holland checks out the arrangement of the R3's banks and the sounds within. However, when he gets the vocoder banks, you can hear how the changing pitch from the keyboard affects his normal voice.
Vocoding ain't easy!
[BILL HOLLAND GIVING A GEARWIRE GREETING THROUGH THE KORG R3'S VOCODER]
BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. My name is Bill Holland.
We have [PH] "Benjie" which contains bells or metal-type instruments like mallets. Listen to this.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
Moving on, we have H which is the motion bank.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
Notice that this utilizes a lot of the built-in sequencing options on the R3, but we'll get to that in another video. For the moment, we'll sample a few of these.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
So what that essentially does is take advantage of the sequencing options in the R3. Now we have the percussion and hit section.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
We have a few more patches in this...,

...and some chords.

SE or special effects.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
Moving on, we have the ARP Sequencer which is also the arpeggiator and sequencing on the R3. these patches all utilize those options.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
We have the vintage bass, bank L.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
The vintage lead bank.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
This is meant to emulate something like a Moog or Buchla or different things like that. All of these patches have something to do with vintage mono synthesis.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
Vintage poly synthesizer which are vintage synthesizers that had the ability to play multiple notes at one time.
[BILL HOLLAND PLAYING ON THE KORG R3]
And formant motion, which takes advantage of the formant filter built into the keyboard.

And notice that I can turn the voice on and off by hitting the vocoder button.
So you can actually go through and record your own audio sequence that modifies the synth while you play. That's the formant motion bank, and there are eight patches, preset, that you can also design your own and set them up how you want to. Now, moving on to the vocoder, we have eight patches. Check one, two. Check one, two. Check one, two.
