Korg TR: Like A Triton LE, Only Smarter

May 19, 2006
Korg puts its TR Music Workstation through the paces -- specifically the 88-key model (it's also available with 76 and 61 keys). The TR is based on the Triton Le, but with some important upgrades. Storage-wise, the TR gets a bump up from 32 to 64 MB of ROM and abandons SmartMedia cards in favor SD cards. (Since you asked, the answer is no, the world can never have too many mobile data storage formats.)

Like the new X50, the TR features 512 Programs and 384 Combinations (each Combination is a mixture of up to eight Programs). Because the TR has twice the ROM as the Triton Le, it is also able to support higher-quality sampled waveforms; the stereo-sampled pianos sounded particularly nice when we heard them at NAMM. Think of the TR as the Triton's smarter, faster, younger brother (but hopefully sans the tendency to rat you out to Mom for giving him an atomic wedgie).

IAN FISHER: All right. Today, I'm showing you the Korg TR. It's new from Korg. It replaces the Triton LE. It's been out about a couple of months, the 61 and the 76 version. Today, we're showing at NAMM the 88 version. Everything is sonically the same. What the differences are that everybody wants to know, the Triton LE had 32 MG of ROM like the Triton Classic. Now, the Tri -- the Korg TR rather has 64 MB of ROM. There's no more SmartMedia card that only is limiting to 128 MB. It actually gives you now a Secure Digital card that is good all the way up to 1 GB. Of course, Secure Digital goes past that now and it possibly could work. But in any event, you have a USB port so that you can go out USB from your keyboard straight to your computer and it gives you MIDI in and out, which is a beautiful feature.

The 88 features the RH2 keybed that is a Korg custom keybed that is found in the higher end Tritons like the Extreme Studio, and what you have are really hot new sounds. Some of the pianos now are new. They were taken from the same sampling session. Some of them has the OASYS so what you have are pianos that sound like this.

Another one that I personally like is more of a darker piano.

If you like to audition sounds, there's an audition button. Like I said, these new sounds are really hot you can actually go into category, go to audition, and I'll play some of them for you.

That's organs.

One of the ones I like a lot is the guitar that sounds like -- Well, before I get to the guitar, there's something else that I like a lot that a lot of people are actually always requesting to be in Korg products.

[IAN FISHER AUDITIONING VARIOUS SCAT VOCAL SOUNDS ON THE KORG TRITON TR]

The whole scat voices Take 6 thing, we've implemented it in now, the new TR. You also have a nice guitar.

And it has a set of new sounds. You have hot drums sounds. You have really hot drum sounds. I was surprised. I really like a lot of them.

And I mean, all in all, it's a new Korg voice set. It sounds really great. For all the people doing more contemporary types of music, you have a lot of hot stuff in there. Some stuff I did for the show sounded like this.

[IAN FISHER PLAYING A SEQUENCE ON THE KORG TRITON TR]

So it's not just only new acoustic sounds, organs. It's like a lot of hot hip hop, trip hop, you know, funk stuff as well. It's very hot actually. Like I said, I was surprised when I heard the sounds. They're really hot. For all the people doing a lot of dance stuff, you'll still be able to do stuff like this actually.

And there you have it, the Korg TR out of your keyboard. Very reasonably priced, you can check with your dealers off the hook. Check it out.
