Kurzweil PC1X: "It Doesn't Sound Like [Poop]."
Noah Hewitt-Ball handles guitar, keyboard and vocal duties for his band, Cabin, meaning he's got enough to worry about without lugging a thirty-year-old Wurlitzer out on the road. The Kurzweil PC1X is an excellent substitute; it replaces the Wurly, as well as producing a few other excellent keyboard sounds.
The PC1X may not have the most sound sets, but Hewitt-Ball sees this as an advantage: instead of wading through a bunch of -- ahem -- crap, he can just dial in a few superior emulations.
NOAH HEWITT-BALL: I'm Noah Hewitt-Ball and the band is Cabin, and I play guitar and key and vocals.
This is obvious why I bought a keyboard because, you know, I can't afford a piano nor can we afford to tour with it, an acoustic piano. But this is much like the guitar pedal that you can program different sounds and then alter them for what you want in a song and then it's always there. You know, you can get to it quickly. The real reason I bought this, not only because of it's acoustic piano, a grand piano sound, is that it had a really nice Wurlitzer sound, and when the band started out, I actually have a vintage Wurlitzer piano, electric piano, and I would run it through this Marshall amp, and it's also so heavy and awkward and it is getting really old. It's at least, you know, 35 years old now, and it's starting to get like crackly. I've had work done to it just to like clean the lines and everything. You know, I don't want to mess with it too much but I feel like the more I took it on the road, it just, you know, starting to get damaged.
And so I bought this because it has a really close sound. I tried a lot of the keyboards but it actually has like five different sounds, and if I could combine them all, I would have the Wurlitzer that I own, but it sounds great and then you can layer, you know, a Wurlitzer and a grand piano or strings and whatever, and you know, just different like synth stuff.
The thing has double weighted keys. It feels really natural, 88 keys, and I think new this is like 1,200 bucks. It's probably less now. It's not like a Casio or something that has like, you know, six million sounds, but they all sound like [EXPLETIVE]. It's like just it has just a few things but they're all really good, you know. They spent a lot of time on that.
