Yaktronix Electronically Modified Didgeridoo: PVC + Blutetooth + Max/MSP = Awesome

December 27, 2009
Yaktronix Electronically Modified Didgeridoo

Forget Billy Corgan and Jessica Simpson. The couple of the year for 2009 is Bluetooth and Max/MSP. The universally recognized and easily accessible wireless protocol marries beautifully with the audio-programming environment, as evidenced by this cool project by Kyle Evans (aka Yaktronix).

Bu outfitting a PVC didgeridoo with homemade hardware and pairing it with a custom-authored Max/MSP patch, Kyle Evans creates haunting, evocative soundscapes. The ancient didgeridoo is already adept at creating endless beds of droning wails (so long as you've mastered circular breathing), but the Electronically modified Digeridoo by Yaktronix is truly radical. Here's Evans's explanation:

"I created this instrument to experiment in the combination of the organic sound qualities of a didgeridoo with the advanced signal processing capabilities of modern computer programming and sound synthesis. This custom built didgeridoo features externally mounted modules that allow the performer to process and manipulate the sound of the instrument in real time. All control data is transmitted wirelessly via blue tooth and is controlling several audio processes created in a custom-built software environment."

Extensive information pertaining to the Max patch he created, as well as electronic schematics, are available on the Yaktronix Bloagspot page. If you'd rather just hear the thing, dig this video:
