Liine Griid App Controls Ableton Live From Afar

August 06, 2010
Liine Griid is a new app that provides a useful interface for controlling Ableton Live remotely.

Remember Liine Griid, the Ableton Live control system for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch first introduced by Richie Hawtin? Well, Griid is now available from the Apple App Store in three versions: Griid, Griid Lite, and Griid Pro.

Griid is a new performance app that provides an intuitive, transparent interface for the Ableton Live clip grid. Using simple gestures and touch objects on Griid's advanced clip grid interface, you can control Live (running on your desktop or laptop) from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch.

According to its maker, Griid is the only controller to offer explicit visual feedback and all the information you need about your Live clips, tracks and scenes. You can see which clips are already playing or cueing and quickly spot the clip you want to launch next. To make your Live sets feel and look familiar on Griid's interface, Griid offers the same clip names and colors as Live. You can see track and scene names, have color-coded scenes, view the Track Header's pie charts or progress bars to view timing information, and more.

In addition, Griid was designed to make it easy to find the clip you want to play. When a clip is nearby, an intuitive drag gesture on the side of the clip grid allows you to scroll to the desired location. Also, when you need to search further away, you can take advantage of inertia scrolling by dragging and quickly releasing, according to the manufacturer. To return to a clip that you've lost track of, just tap on the corresponding track header to get back to that clip right away.

Griid's Overview feature generates a bird's eye view of the whole Live set no matter what its size, at the tap of a button; touch anywhere in the Overview to jump immediately to the part you want to see.

In short, Griid allows you to perform with Live without having to look at your computer screen.

Since Griid is a modular system, more control modules will become available at a later time. For now, Griid is available in three types: Griid Pro, Griid, and Griid Lite. Griid Pro lets you perform with an advanced clip grid interface that takes advantage of the iPad's large screen size. Griid is the version for iPhone and iPod Touch, while Griid Lite is a free version with limited features. All versions are available now in the App Store.
