Line 6 POD X3 Live: Gone In 60 Milliseconds

May 08, 2008
Line 6 POD X3 Delay

Ever since U2's The Edge invented delay in the early 1980s (editor's note: not even remotely true), it has become one of the most popular effects and addictive audio tools in many guitarist's rigs. Line 6 doesn't skimp on delay options on their multi-effects pedals.

It puts airports to shame.

Distortion Effects

Here you go These are some of the amp simulations. There should be a few picks of some high gain models and some crunchier models.

Not quite what I had in mind...

No, I mean the distortion pedals. You know, the Rat, the Big Muff, the Fuzz Face, you know what I mean.

BILL HOLLAND: [VOICE EFFECTED WITH DELAY] Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. Now, delay is a just -- Delay is a ju -- Delay is just what ha -- Would you stop that?

[VOICE WITHOUT DELAY] Thank you. Ah, delay isn’t just what happens when you’re watching a poorly dubbed Godzilla movie. It’s also a way to add echo to your guitar and add a sense of ambience to your guitar playing. Delays can be used on a variety of things from vocals to guitars, but in case of the Line 6 POD X3 Live, we’re going to look at how these delays react with your guitar and also with the pedal that you can set to tweak the various parameters of delay. Now, I’ve played around with the delay on here for a while. Henry and I got in here and toyed around with it, and honestly it sounds great. The delays on here are really, really solid for being an amp modeler so let’s take a look at how those sound.

Now we’re going to start with some analog delay.

BILL HOLLAND: Got a lot of feedback though, I’ll bring it back down. I’ll go over to analog delay with modulation.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Tube echo.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Multi-head delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: And remember, your mix is here. You can adjust the tempo, the actual speed of the delay. So, I can actually speed up how fast the delay is coming, how fast those echoes appear.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Josh plays again real quick, you’ll hear the difference.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: And if I slow it down...,

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: ...I can move on to sweep echo. I’m going to turn everything back to kind of where it was at before.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: That’s the sweep echo. Moving on, we have digital delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Stereo delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Drop the feedback.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Ping-pong delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Reverse delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Echo platter.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Tape echo.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Low-res delay.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Phase echo.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: Double echo.

[J. IRVING-GILES PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH THE LINE 6 POD X3 LIVE]

BILL HOLLAND: And that’s it for the delays. So, we’re going to take a look back in a little bit and see some of the other effects that we can get out of the POD X3 Live. For now, I’m Bill Holland and this is Gearwire.Com.
