Mackie 2404-VLZ3 And Mackie 3204-VLZ3: Compact FX Mixers With USB Added To VLZ3 Series
High headroom, low noise, effects processing, channel compression, USB connectivity, and plenty of channels come together for the Mackie VLZ3 Series of mixers, which starting this summer, will have two new additions: the 24-channel 2404-VLZ3 and the 32-channel 3204-VLZ3.
Both the 2404-VLZ3 and the 3204-VLZ3 mid-format analog consoles feature dual internal effects processors, dedicated compression, and 4-track recording via USB. According to Mackie, the VLZ3 4-Bus Premium FX Mixers with USB deliver proven, professional sound quality and performance in an ultra-compact and rugged design with the channel count needed for SR applications. Both models have 6 AUX sends, 4 subgroups, 8 compressors, 2 RMFX effects, and the 4x2 USB interface; the 3204-VLZ3 has 32 line inputs (channels) and 28 mic inputs, while the 2404-VLZ3 has 24 line inputs and 20 mic inputs.
What's more, the new mixers offer low-noise, high-headroom XDR2 mic channels (20 and 28, respectively) and two dedicated channels for stereo inputs. Inline compression is also available on each of the four subgroups as well as on four select channels. The dual 32-bit RMFX effects processors provide 16 user-friendly presets, including tap delay, while the integrated 4x2 USB interface offers multiple routing options to a digital audio workstation (DAW). A convenient stereo return is assignable to the mains for background music or into a channel strip for mix integration.
The 2404-VLZ3 and 3204-VLZ3 consoles are compact for their type, and are sturdy and rugged. Use them in the studio or bring them on the road for use with portable applications.
Ideal for SR and recording applications, the new compact FX mixers feature the following:
- Low noise, high headroom XDR2 mic preamps
- 2-, 3-, or 4-band active EQ
- Integrated 4-track recording via USB
- Dual 32-bit RMFX effects processors
- 16 presets, including tap delay
- Assignable stereo return
- Rugged “Built-Like-A-Tank” Mackie design
Mackie expects to begin shipping the new VLZ3 4-Bus Series Premium FX Mixers with USB in July of 2010. The 24-channel 2404-VLZ3 will run at $1,349.99 (MSRP), while the 32-channel 3204-VLZ3 will list at $1,699.99 (MSRP). I have used the Mackie VLZ...
series of mixers and the mic pre amplifiers were usable for sure. Definitely better than many small mixer microphone pre amplifiers. They were clean and if you did not over drive them you could always get a distortion free sound. In fact when I set the gain structure up for the recording I would intentional under drive the mic inputs. So for example I would PFL the channel on say a kick drum and peak the signal level at -6VU, the pre amplifiers are very, very quiet and so the noise floor was never a problem. This was also good as it gave your more headroom in your recorded at 24 bit recording. This resulted in much cleaner and better sounding recordings.
Now Mackie have the VLZ3 range I have heard that the mic pre amplifiers are even more transparent and have a slightly improved bass response as well. (The lows are a little more present) That will ensure that the any bass instruments are accurately recorded as one small criticism of the standard VLZ model was they pre amplifiers were a touch bass shy.
Glad to see these have been updated.
