Mackie HR624MKII Monitors Have This Little Passive Suction Thingy

Mackie HR624MKII Monitors Cabin

Besides looking like the speakers from Lord Vader's own personal component Hi-Fi, the Mackie HR624MKIIs feature a pretty spectacular fidelity for the price, a point that had a lot to do with Dave Chale's purchase of a pair of HR624MKII's for his band's project studio. He had his heart set on some HR824MKIIs, but an extra 400 some-odd bucks for a measly 2" per didn't seem like the smartest investment.

Besides, Dave needs to save up to get that new eight-core Mac Pro . . . again (long story).

DAVE CHALE: I play a CNC custom drum set. This is part of our gear. This is Penny Lane. She is huge. Anyway, this is a Mac Pro. This is one of like the middle-of-the-road Mac Pros, the ones that came out before the Leopard and sitting like still on Tiger and things because that’s the only way you can only run Pro Tools on Tiger, Pro Tools LE on Tiger at the moment. So, I actually bought an eight-core Mac Pro and had to return it because it wouldn’t run Tiger and I didn’t want to wait another 11 months to record stuff. So, say it’s a dual -- Intel Duo processor computer with two 2.6’s. It’s got a 250-GB hard drive and 3-GB of RAM, and it’s running Pro Tools.

PATRICK OGLE: Which Pro Tools are you using?

DAVE CHALE: I use Pro Tools 7.1. It’s just kind of like it’s the newest generation but without anything of the updates, anything that’s up to 7.4 and Pr Tools HD and I think 7.3 and Pro Tools LE. The 7.4 is compatible with the new Mac Pros. We don’t have that for LE yet. It sucks.

These are Mackie LE -- Oh geez.

PATRICK OGLE: Mackie HR624?

DAVE CHALE: Yeah. Mackie HR624.

PATRICK OGLE: So, why did you get the Mackie HR624?

DAVE CHALE: Um.

PATRICK OGLE: Price is an acceptable reason.

DAVE CHALE: Yeah. There’s a, you know, the last place that we went to record had 824’s, the older version, and I really liked the way they sounded. I didn’t have enough money for the new 824’s because they’re really pricey, but they have a new thing in the back here. It’s really hard to see but right back in there, there is a little speaker that is completely passive. It’s not hooked up to any wires or anything but it’s a sub-control speaker and controls the low end of it because it’s a closed sub so you get a lot of suction when the speaker goes out, and then a lot of pressure on the speaker goes in, so that relieves a lot of that and makes the speaker react better which is why I bought the new ones as opposed to the old 824’s that I heard that I liked because they we’re the same price when these came out.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
