The throw-back front-end of the Onyx-i series has plenty of benefits often overlooked in home-studio digital recording, namely pre-converter-stage EQ, insert, and aux patching and routing. The familiar feel and layout will not intimidate seasoned analog recordists entering the world of digital recording. The highly intuitive design offers faster and a more flexible way o handling recording functions. The Onyx-i has "deep FireWire integration" paired with analog features such as Onyx mic preamps and Perkins EQ, which could be implemented along the recording path at just the push of a button. Users also have the option of choosing to record auxes, groups (1640i) and the master L/R signal. The flagship model, the Onyx 1640i has a very flexible 16x16 FireWire interface that allows users to return up to 16 DAW channels back to channel strips for tape-style mixdown. This is a far more sophisticated multitracking environment than most simple peripheral interfaces provide.
