AES Vienna Video: The Mackie VLZ3 Mixer
MACKIE REPRESENTATIVE: And these are the new VLZ-3 or VLZ-3 if you’re American. This has replaced the previous VLZ Pro, and I don't know if you can pan over there to this side, you can see the evolution of the Mackie products as we have gone from Neolithic Mackie there in original 1604 which helped found the company, and unfortunately they’re blocked by speakers here but we get all the way up to the 1604 VLZ and the evolution of the Mackie 1604 product line.
So a new one, one of our analog engineers decided, “I’m going to dress what he thought were the three of the weaker points of that desk.” He upgraded the mic pres which are now called the XDR-2 mic pres, so it’s a significant improvement upon the previous series with actually greater bandwidth and better RF rejection built into these preamps, and I’ll leave the subjective talk about it to other people to decide because if I was a technical guy, I don’t like say ooh they’re sweeter or warmer because hey that’s up to you.
It’s a totally new EQ design. We decided to scrap the EQ design and start over. Again his plan was, “Let’s have a nice EQ that’s usable. We don’t want it to get too brittle or too harsh,” so he’s redesigned that. And one of my favorites is he’s increased the headroom in the mix bus. Actually, the headroom has been increasd throughout the console and so has the frequency response. You have a wider band with the frequency here, but he’s increased the headroom and the left and right. So, besides that, they’re very similar in form factor to the original ones, 1604. You can still rotate this pod so if you want all your inputs and outputs up here, you can do that. You can have them like I have it configured now with all the outputs here, or even flip them around to the back so you can rack mount this and have all of the I/O facing backwards out of the rack. It’s up to you how you want to do that. That’s we’ve been doing that since the original 1604 and we’ve carried that tradition, but one thing we’ve added -- I’ll disappear off-camera one second. We’ve added carrying handles into the back now. The nice thing about this is it becomes almost like a flight case concept, so all of these have a handle and when you carry them, if you accidentally bump into something, it’s all solid steel on the back so it’s not going to actually damage the mixer, just the bottom, the paint might get scratched but hey it’s the bottom. And this new design with these curved edges actually makes the product much more strong and robust, so that’s a new thing, oh and the power supply is now universal. We’ve been making the 1604 for so long before we ever did, so now in this upgrade you can actually switch between Japan, North America, and Europe. I should say 240, 220, and 100 -- I’m sorry 240, 120, and 100. And that’s the new VLZ Series.
