Manson MB-1 Matt Bellamy Signature Guitar: Muse Guitarist / Vocalist OK's Production Models

Manson MB-1 Matt Bellamy Signature Guitar

The race for "Guitar Released In 2009 With The Most Silly Technological DooDads" is on. In the lead, nearly tied for first place, are the Parker Adrian Belew Signature Fly and the new Manson MB-1 Matt Bellamy Signature Guitar.

Bellamy is the lead vocalist and guitarist for Muse, a UK band known for putting on such literally spectacular live shows as to almost completely distract from the fact that their singer is basically doing an impression of Thom Yorke circa 1994. Bellamy (no relation to Bill) originally contracted Manson's Guitar Shop in Exeter to build him a custom electric with an X/Y touch-screen MIDI controller for triggering digital guitar effects and control stage lighting. There were no plans, originally, to put the guitar into production, but someone probably mentioned -- either to Bellamy or Manson's -- that Muse has a crap-ton of fans around the world, some of whom might even be willing and able to plunk down stupid amounts of change for an altogether spartan-looking axe with a Korg Kaoss pad built-in.

Hence, the MB-1. Available in red or "Matt Black" (yep), the MB-1 will also feature a Manson Bareknuckle humbucker in the bridge position and a humbucker-sustainer system in the neck. The X/Y pad connects to a separate MIDI out jack for controlling. . . anything, really (MusicRadar.com has a video of the MB-1 in action. . . lucky Brits).

So, I mentioned "stupid change". . . exactly how stupid? How about £2,999 for the black one and £3,199 for the red? That's about $4,384 and $4,676 US, respectively. Oh, and that's for the models without the MIDI control screen (add another £300 for that).

Manson plans more Bellamy-inspired production axes, including a production version of the "DeLorean," an aluminum-bodied guitar that sports a Z.Vex Fuzz Factory under the hood. Until then, enjoy this picture of Matt Bellamy playing his MB-1 and looking "cool":

Just because something new

By: Anonymous Genius (not verified)

Just because something new is adapted to fit the guitar does not mean its ridiculous. If you were critiquing back in the days you would be complaining about "electric" guitars (nutters!) and then "distortion" (ludicrous!).

To be fair, Matt is one of the, if not the most unique and boundary pushing guitarists this side of the bicentenial.

Have you actually listened

By: Anonymous Coward (not verified)

Have you actually listened to any Muse? Saying that he is basically doing an impression of Thom Yorke circa 1994 was a remark that took aim only when Showbiz, Muse's 1st album, came out and was quashed by anyone with half a brain, OoS and all future albums then furthered this by completely moving away from Radiohead styles. If you're going to have a pop at Muse at least come up with something original... I mean it doesn't even have to be true!

Matt Bellamy, Freddy Mercury, David Bowie...blahhhh

By: Danny Boy (not verified)

...Originality is quite a tricky thing, but no tricks to Muse, just pure, raw, powerful talent with a unique approach to songwriting, playing, and all in all a breakthrough artist for the ages...not to mention, 3 cats (most of the time) making all that beauty...pretty rad and deserving of all but the criticism of those who only wish...they could fill Wembley Stadium, hah, hehe...go rip Lady Gaga or something if you wanna rip, rip-off artists....or most hip-hop these days, leave the real artists alone and let them inspire us other 'real' artist who choose inspiration over envy and jealousy...peace, out...BTW, checkout DevAngel on myspace and give a listen please and thxx...rip me all you want, I'll make more, haha...music that is :-))

By: Anonymous (not verified)

There's only one song where he sounds at all like Freddy Mercury. That's Unites States of Eurasia. Otherwise he has a very unique voice. So yeah, you're wrong.

Well, bless the US!

By: Jon (not verified)

Don't worry give it another 5 years and the US might actually get what Muse are about - just like Radiohead and Coldplay (you're welcome to the latter - we don't want them)
And O'Malley - if you're going to be that cynical in open review f**k off and go listen to disturbed because your musical integrity is worth absolutely nothing.

Don't generalize

By: Heather (not verified)

Actually, I'm from the US and I think Muse is phenomenal. They are one of my favorite groups. So don't lump all Americans together because one loser made an ignorant review. Some of us have great music taste and appreciate Muse as amazing musicians and spectacular performers.
