Marshall JCM800 And HiWatt Cabinet Warm The Bench While Donita Sparks Muses On OPEC
Donita Sparks + The Stellar Moments are currently touring the Midwest and East Coast, and are in turn feeling the pinch at the pump. In lieu of driving, the band has been flying between venues, which means some of their favorite live gear has to stay at home while they scrimp and scrounge for loaners and rentals.
Donita Sparks spoke with Pat Ogle about not getting to play her amp of choice, a Marshall JCM800, and I'm sure we can all empathize.
DONITA SPARKS: Hi. I’m Donita Sparks.

I use a Marshall JCM800 with a channel switcher, so it’s got reverb and distortion, and a Hiwatt cabinet. But on this tour, because we flew out here, I’m kind of using the cabinets of opening bands, and tonight nobody had a cabinet so I’m using a combo amp that I’ve never played before. So, you just kind of have to wing it sometimes. So, we’re going to -- Hopefully, it’ll sound good.
I think it’s a Fender, so it should be interesting.
PATRICK OGLE: It can make a big difference.
DONITA SPARKS: That will make a big difference, but you know, what are you going to do? You have to like roll with it, you know. Well, I checked the head but not the cabinet, so and every stop along the way we’ve the cabinets to play out of, but this one.
PATRICK OGLE: Why did you fly?
DONITA SPARKS: Because gas is so expensive.
PATRICK OGLE: Really? So it’s like cheaper just to fly?
DONITA SPARKS: Yeah.
PATRICK OGLE: Wow.
DONITA SPARKS: Yeah. Touring is very expensive. It’s going to be very slim pickings I think for clubs with bands. I really do because I don’t even know if we can sustain this.

DONITA SPARKS: I’ve noticed that a lot of sound guys at clubs, you know, they do this day in and day out so, you know, that can get pretty tedious I’m sure, you know, and they’ve probably have gotten some attitude from some bands. I always think kill them with kindness because that they become very cooperative like if you come in there with attitude, they can give you way more attitude back and they can [EXPLETIVE] up your whole set. You know what I mean? So, you know, give them some props if it sounds good and be nice, you know, because then they’ll have more of a vested interest in you sounding good, because I think if you don’t get rapport happening and you don’t have your own sound person and you don’t get the rapport with the club guy, then you could be screwed.
