Marshall MXL US 006 Microphone

November 15, 2006
A look at the Marshall MXL USB 006 microphone from AES 2006 in San Francisco
Marshall presents the MXL USB 006, a class compliant USB mic, aimed at general-use consumers, podcasters, and home studio dabblers. The Marshall/MXL rep says the USB 006 mic sounds comparable to other MXL studio mics thanks to a gold-plated diaphragm, and the fact that the USB 006 operates at 48 volts over a USB connection! The video says "starts shipping in two weeks," but you can ignore that now. Get the full USB 006 details in our exclusive demo video.
Check out Marhsall's USB 006 page.

SCOTT: I’m Scott from MXL Microphones, and we’re showing our new MXL USB 006. This is the easiest plug and play USB mic that we know of. You just plug it in, computer automatically recognizes it, all your gain adjustments are done on the back with this high, medium, and low switch. There are no drivers to install so there’s nothing to mess with. You just plug it in and it works, and it starts shipping in two weeks. It has a retail price or a street price of S129.95. I comes with the stand, the mic, the cable, and it comes in a cool canvas traveling pouch.

We also are going to have some free simple software for recording. It’s available from our web site. It works with our USB mic. It’s kind of like having a DAT player. You just hit record, you hit stop, you hit play, very easy to use. We’re kind of targeting the consumer market, podcasting, parents wanting to record their children, people trying to break into showbiz. [LAUGHING]

The other thing is this is the only USB mic on the market that is running on 48 volts and is using gold plated diaphragm. Getting 48 volts out of a 5-volt USB cable is extremely difficult and we’ve done it. So, we’re very proud it sounds like our other studio mics but there’s no preamp needed. You plug it in direct and you’re ready to rock.
