M-Audio Torq Connectiv Lets You Gets Your Hands Back On Your Music

May 23, 2008
M-Audio Torq Connectiv

M-Audio's Torq system, like Serrato Scratch and NI Traktor, allows DJs to scratch MP3s using MIDI time coded control vinyl via their Connectiv audio interface. It also comes with software that takes all the fun out of DJing. Luckily, Jason Donnelly shows us how to bypass that feature.

Another cool feature about the M-Audio Torq system: writing about it makes my computer's auto-spell-check feature think I'm an idiot.

JASON DONNELLY: Jason Donnelly here with Gearwire.Com, and we’re looking at the M-Audio Conectiv USB audio interface for DJs.

So here in the lower left corner we have our browser. I’m going to select a song here. Selecting a song is quite simple. Just drag it from the explorer to either side, deck A on top and deck B on the bottom, two songs loaded here as you can see. And see the waveform drawing out here, when that’s done it’s loaded. Typically, I use the vinyl to control this but right now I have it set to internal so I can simply.

Press play there. We got our speed adjustment, automatically calculating the BPMs at 126.6 on this song. On the other, 140.

That song might be a little too fast, so what I’m going to do is grab a different song, 127.4 so we’re a lot closer. Now, if you wanted to, you can visually match the tempos with the mouse right here on the screen. There’s also an automatic sync feature where you can tell one deck to sync to the next, cooking this area up here, but that takes all the fun away from actually being a DJ so that’s where we connect the Torq vinyl.

Clicking on the preferences tab and now we have external control preferences. The top here, external control, set that to yes, go to the audio preferences on this first tab, and you’ll see mixer mode, external. All my outputs are set here, deck A output 1 and 2, deck be output 3 and 4, sampler output 1 and 2, line in A input 1 and 2, on input B input 3 and 4, and etc.

Okay, so now we’re using the vinyl to control this MP3.
