Mellotron 400 Inspires Outpourings of Fan Love for Damon Fox of Bigelf
September 04, 2009
Instead of just throwing in the "Vintage Sounds" sample loop pack, Damon Fox of Bigelf hauls an actual Mellotron 400 around with him wherever he plays. That, and a stablefull of other keyboards with various accoutrement. To this band, the Mellotron is a magical instrument that really justifies playing the real thing.
Bigelf lives the dream when it comes to vintage gear. And though Fox doesn't exactly say this in the interview, you know he wouldn't look half as badass playing some dweeby little laptop or spaceage keyboard. Gear isn't gear unless it makes you break a sweat while loading in.

I bought a Mellotron in the late 70's from the keyboard player of SAGA... formerly Canadian band Fludd.... picked it up in the studio when Saga was recording their first album.... bought for $1500 with scratchy violin cello flute tapes.
Sold it early 80's for a mere $900 .. could kick myself the tron was mint.
Now it would have fetched close to $10k to collectors.. oh well hindsight is everything.... besides i didnt like pressing so hard on keyboard.
I have M-tron Pro and quite happy to not have to beast to contend with.

If you had a Mark II it would probably fetch far more. A mint 400 is worth about $5,500-$6,000, but only if it has been fully restored. No matter how great yours was back in the 80s, they don't age well unless meticulously maintained. I have several in my shop right now being restored.

Good interview, and he puts things very intelligently into perspective.
The only distraction is that guy walking in and out - that's rude and not very professional. Doesn't he care there's an interview going on?
