Mesa/Boogie M-Pulse 600
Jesse Walker -- bassist for indie rock-rap band Flobots -- was searching for a new bass head, and the Mesa/Boogie M-Pulse 600 was the only head that fell within the stringent guidelines laid out in the Three Laws of Flobotics:
- A flobot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A flobot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A flobot must play fat, throbbing bass through a Mesa/Boogie M-Pulse 600 hybrid head as long as such said fat, throbbing bass-playing does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The head that I’m currently using is a Mesa M-Pulse 600, and I’ve had it for about maybe five or six months, and I started shopping for new heads about five or six months ago, and I was looking at various things, Gallien-Krueger and Ampeg. And anyway, as a way of summing it, I knew I wanted to get an Ampeg head and I played through them and they sounded pretty good, and then I started talking to a friend of mine who had a Mesa 400 Plus, and this is an all-tube head. I played through it and it was like exactly the way bass was supposed to sound, just like cut right through everything. It was huge. It was a big, burly sound that was like kind of like exactly what I’ve been looking for.
So, I found this M-Pulse 600, which is kind of a hybrid head. It’s got a tube preamp and a solid state amp and it’s kind of changed my life on stage like it just like I feel I had cut through the mix like I can always make sure that I’m heard no matter what the monitor situation is like so I really love it.
Having the tubes in there gives it that little extra warmth. You know what I mean? It just gives you that warm, that rich tone. You know it’s the all tube head is sometimes a little bit impractical, and so having the solid state amp is helpful that yeah. I like the combination right now. I think that in the future I may experiment with having more tubes than less but this head right now is really great.
What it really is is that it is almost not even something that you hear when you’re playing in the store or something that you hear once you get it on stage and there are other musicians around you. It’s like I’ve played on heads. You know, we’ve had back line situations where I’m playing on other company’s heads, and I’ve got to turn it way up and I’m still getting lost on stage like I still feel like I can’t hear myself, and there’s something about this Mesa head that I’ve got it turned up half way and it always manages to sonically slice through everything so that I can hear what’s going on.
