Mesa Boogie M6 Carbine: What's In A Name?

June 24, 2008
Mesa Boogie M6 Carbine

If you remember back to late January 2008, a young writer / editor with the determination of two lions battling for position over fresh zebra carcass introduced the Mesa Boogie Fathom to the frothing Gearwire masses as they clamored and rioted for the latest in bass amp related happenings. If you do remember, forget it. Apparently, another company outside of the musical instrument industry was registering the name "The Fathom," as unfathomable as that may seem, and rather than devour the hearts of their enemies, Mesa Boogie has decided to change the name of their recently released bass amp to the M6 Carbine and avoid legal entanglements.

The M6 Carbine 2x12 Combo enlarges your tone without widening your road load. The tight, articulate bottom, rich and round mids and open top all pack nicely in a more portable rig than many bassists prefer to employ based on street cred alone. It tries to put an end to the secret point system bassists use to compare their machismo -- multiply the number of speakers in your cabinet to the mean of the diameters of each speaker and take your total to the power of x where x is equivalent to the number off strings on your bass minus three.

The M6 Carbine refuses to lose any of the goodies it had in its short lived stint as The Fathom. It still pumps fresh, clean air out of its all tube preamp. The VOICE and DEEP PULL features are still present and bassists still get a massive 600 watts of mosfet power.
