Video: Taking The MidiWorks MidiJet Pro For A Walk

May 04, 2007
MidiJet Test Video

The MidiWorks MidiJet Pro is a wireless MIDI system that advertises an extreme operating range at the same time it brags about being the live stage choice for Gwen Stefani, U2, Dragonforce and numerous other monstrous tours. With claims like these, we had to find out the real deal. So we had Dan Agosto walk through the MidiJet Pro and wire it up to a Yamaha QY-70 rigged as a controller. After that, Dan kept walking -- through the door and down the hall and into the stairway -- to test the range of the transmitter. How'd the MidiJet do? Watch the video to find out.

midi jet pro

By: Virtual Accordionist (not verified)

I saw your demo. I am confused about the sound when walking with the Yamaha QY-70 controlling the NORD LEAD 3]. Is the sound as the man is walking the sound from the NORD LEAD 3 played back on the Yamaha QY-70 or is that the sound of the Yamaha QY-70?

In your video I would want to have a camera/mic at the NORD LEAD 3 end to see if the NORD LEAD 3 WAS STILL MAKING SOUNDS WHEN THE MAN WALKED DOWN HIS 4 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS.

Set me straight?

I know if i took my accordion and traveled with it with the midi jet pro I would want to know if my sound module was still working when i was that many feet away from it up to 500 feet. I know i could hear my accordion, but that does not guarantee it was coming out the other end unless someone told me.

DAN AGOSTO: Hi. I’m Dan Agosto for Gearwire.Com, and today we’re checking out something a little different from what we usually check out. This is the MidiJet Pro wireless MIDI system from classic MidiWorks, and it’s a pretty interesting system. I mean wireless MIDI is something that we haven’t really seen much of but all of the sudden different companies are coming out with it. And this seems like a pretty cohesive system and also very -- we do lots of different things with it.

What you get with the system is all right here. You get a receiver, a black receiver, a tan or beige transmitter, and then you also get two color-coded MIDI cables, very nice, four batteries (Each of these runs on two batteries and draws about 6 volts, so they can last a good long while), and then each of them -- now both of then have this but each of them have an input for your adapter, which they said for what’s a 6-volt, 500-mA transformer. You can just plug that in here, and so either one of them can do this. And if you do want to run both of them off a transformer, you just need another 6-volt, 500-mA transformer.

So, nice things about these, you can actually bend the antenna up, 45-degree angle if you so choose or it could be like that if you’re wearing it like on a belt pack or something like that. Now, the way these are synced up is kind of interesting. Open up the battery pack, and you look in there and remove these little silver battery replacers. There’s some jumpers in there, and the way that you set up these jumpers will really that’s how you select the channels. As you can see right now, they’re all up, and this actually is sort of for like an auto-sync sort of capability that these have. So, if they’re both set into that, they’ll try and discover each other because they both have -- each system -- both of these sort of have their own signature.

So, what we’re going to do to kind of test this out is we’re lucky enough to borrow the Yamaha QY-70 from our editor, Rob, and we’re going to sort of take this out and see what it can do, see how far we can go, and still control our keyboard over here which we have, the Nord Lead 3.

All right. So, we got our transmitter and receiver synced up. We’re using our QY-70...

...to control our keyboard about 12 feet away right now. I have the transmitter in my pocket. So, what we’re going to do is we’re actually going to take a little field trip outside and see how well this does. Now, mind you I’m wearing a Lav mic right now, and that’ll probably go out before this thing does I’m guessing, so let’s see what happens.

We run an entire hall first of all.

All right. Now, my Lav mic is probably going to cut off as soon as I get into the stairwell, so we’ll see if this thing holds up.

Pardon me with my playing so good. I’m concentrating on walking down the stairs.
