Electro-Harmonix's Mike Matthews On The Stereo Memory Man With Hazarai

August 08, 2007
Mike Matthews on the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai at Summer NAMM 2007
Rob Warmowski cornered Electro-Harmonix's legendary Mike Matthews at Summer NAMM 2007, and asked him to explain "Hazarai," among other things. You'll remember Matthews as the guy who fought the Russian mob and won. He also makes some mean pedals, so he can basically say whatever he wants. Check it out in the Gearwire video.

aww, how cute you got him to admit that it was digital and all the crap that they added to it was just to cover that up

digital vs. analog

To the above, terrified of digital commentors: No reason to be a purist...try designing an anolog reverse delay. Hope you're ready to canabilise an echoplex, 'cause running a tape backwards is the only way you're gonna do it...I don't think you'll get footswitch functionality with that, and it would be larger then a lunchbox and weigh about 10 pounds...super sweet on a pedalboard :)Oh yeah, It won't be realtime, and therefore won't really be a reverse delay unless maybe you had 2 echolplexes...You see where this is going. And Mike has a point. BBD's are not going t' be 'round forever, so as a business you gotta look to keeping an edge. I've played a vintage Memory Man for over 10 years and love it. And BTW, EHX still sells it. You can buy that if you don't want all the "crap...to cover up" the digital. Just don't look for those extra features in an analog delay...you won't find them.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Hey everybody. It’s Rob Warmowski from Gearwire, and we are here at Summer NAMM 2007 with Mike Matthews of Electro-Harmonix, and legend in history. How are you doing, Mike?

MIKE MATTHEWS: Hey! Rock & roll!

ROB WARMOWSKI: There’s -- Mike, there’s -- we’re seeing a lot of new products out of Electro-Harmonix this show. Tell us a little bit about the new Stereo Memory Man.

MIKE MATTHEWS: Well, the Stereo Memory Man has a lot of Hazarai.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Yeah. I noticed there’s a knob labeled Hazarai. Joe, can you do us a favor and get a shot of right -- yeah. Yeah. It’s a white knob there. It’s in the upper right. Mike, tell everybody -- Right in front, right here. Yeah.

JOE WALLACE: Pull your mic down a little bit.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Sorry. Sure. What exactly is Hazarai?

MIKE MATTHEWS: Hazarai is a lot of extra stuff. A lot of extra stuff.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Could you be a little more vague?

MIKE MATTHEWS: Yeah. It’s a Yiddish word.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Okay.

MIKE MATTHEWS: A Stereo Memory Man like it just -- it’s a great delay and stereo but it’s got a lot of features all packed in and, you know, like reverse, looping -- The best thing to do is really, you know, listen to a demo of it then you can see, but it’s a great sounding unit. We have actually eight new products that we’re showing at the show and that’s one of our favorites.

ROB WARMOWSKI: The new Memory Man is a -- Actually I was going to make a statement. I’ll just make it a question. I had read that the old Memory Man design being built around the Bucket Brigade analog chips was discontinued because the world supplier of those chips came to an end. Now, did I understand that right?

MIKE MATTHEWS: No. [LAUGHING]

ROB WARMOWSKI: Okay. So then straighten me up please.

MIKE MATTHEWS: Okay. You’re right. The Bucket Brigade -- see analog Bucket Brigades made by Panasonic were discontinued 10 years ago, and but we have about a two-and-a-half-year supply left, so eventually they’ll be gone but we’re still making them.

ROB WARMOWSKI: And are they in the new Stereo Memory Man?

MIKE MATTHEWS: No. The Stereo Memory Man is digital, but I don’t think -- It really has a wonderful warm analog sound and that’s not hype. That’s the truth.
