David S. Moré's Brownie: Springs, Strings And Contact Mics

March 18, 2008
David S. Moré Brownie

Instruments are like dessert foods. You can buy them at the store, and they'll sound good and taste delicious, or you can make them at home and come up with something completely unique. The Brownie uses a camera box, strings, springs and contact microphones for a wide range of tones achievable by plucking, scraping, striking and more.

Plus, the camera box is relatively empty, so you can actually store delicious homemade brownies inside of it, producing a slightly different tone and an emergency snack option in case your sugar diabetes starts to wig out during a recording session.

I didn't design the Brownie!!!!

By: Kent Lambert

On behalf of the Brownie's actual creator, David S. Moré, I must set the record straight: I, Kent Lambert, did not design the Brownie. I bought it from Mr. Moré after playing with it and many other fantastic Moré creations at Chicago's Texas Ballroom in 2003. I came to know the Brownie intimately and have used it in many projects, including a live score for the Carl Dreyer film Vampyr. The Brownie is indeed a wonderful and unique instrument--I love it dearly but I did not design or create it.

Thanks for the clarification! Regardless, the Brownie is a pretty neat instrument.
