Cwejman S1 Semi-Modular: Musikmesse 2007 Video
According to Penko this piece provides the tools neccesary to create vintage and modern sounds. We can also see that it exhibits high rexivity with regards to knob turnage. We like it!!!
PENKO: Hello. I’m Penko from Schneiders Buero. We are selling analog gear in Europe, and this is the Cwejman S1. It’s a high integrated monophonic synthesizer, totally analog. You can’t store but you can play, and the interesting thing is it’s semi-modular. So, it has an internal architecture. You can start playing without patching anything.
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
And of course you can patch things if you want different connections. So now I described how the architecture is of this very, very innovative synthesizer. You have three oscillators with seven waveforms each, and three of the seven waveforms you can modulate the pulse width, which is crazy. These three oscillators go into two mixers. The first mixer is for the low frequent -- for the low pass filter, sorry, and the second mixer is for the multimode filter. So, you can assign each oscillator in the mix in one or both of these filters. Additional possibilities in this mixer are that you have here a ring modulator and you can say that the multimode filter go into the low pass filter, and for this you don’t have to make a patch. You only have to turn it up.
So, now I’ll demonstrate a little bit what you can do. Very interesting is that you have high integrated internal trim functions that you can compare very fast and judge about the sound. For example, you have an aspect in the sound and you search for this aspect, then you can make -- find it out very -- sorry -- then you can find it out very fast. For example...,

...you will hear now a sound.
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
And now I hear only the multimode filter, and I can -- now when I turn this knob, I hear a -- Sorry again. I have made a mistake. So, now I can hear the low pass filter...,
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
...and when I turn this button, I hear the multimode filter...
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
...which is now a high pass filter, and of course I can mix it...
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
...very fast without losing my sound editing. It’s only to find something out. Or I want a different envelope. It’s possible to mix them as the same way with the cross knob, with this knob I will demonstrate.
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
And of course I can mix it again.
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
Then I can distort it. And another thing which I forgot before is you have here these two filters and these three knobs in each of the filters you can adjust control voltages to something. For example, the envelopes, inverse and positive, and here you can decided between oscillator or LFO. So, all in all it takes too long to describe everything what’s possible, but all in all it’s a high-integrated, very fast controllable synthesizer with interesting intelligent new -- Sorry -- intelligent new features. For example, the last interesting new feature is you have here for the three oscillators the first knob, it’s a play knob. You can play with it without losing the sounds in the patch. It’s only for playing, so after playing and you turn it away, it’s the same sound again. So, I demonstrate it and putting the microphone away.
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
As you can hear I hope, it’s extremely how you can change the sound. And when it goes back, this knob turns back again...
[PENKO PLAYING THE CWEJMAN S1]
...then I have the old sound again. It’s very easy. So I hope you have an impression of the S1 of Cwejman. Thank you.
