Mold -- An Instrumental Problem In Costa Rica

November 26, 2007
Moldy Mandolin Cases

If you didn't think mold was a serious problem, guess again. Check out Jesse Greist's mandolin case. On the outside, it's not so bad, but taking one look at the felt interior shows an entirely different story. Jesse can't wipe the mold away from the felt because the felt will not dry.

Thus far, the mold has not affected his mandolin, which he still keeps in the case for transport. Costa Rica's tropical weather, however, does prove that it can upset your instruments.

JESSE GREIST: The one thing that I can show people here is that the case has been a casualty of Monteverde.

GRETCHEN HASSE: Here.

JESSE GREIST: There is mold growing all over the inside, and because it’s like a felt material, I can’t wipe it down like the outside I’ve been able to keep a little bit better. This is mold growth of the last three days since the last time I was able to.

GRETCHEN HASSE: Three days

JESSE GREIST: Yeah. Three days mold growth here on the outside, and this I can wipe down with a warm cloth, but it has -- So far, it has not affected the Mandolin itself. I think the varnish that’s on the outside of it has kept it protected from the mold, but like I say I have to figure out what I’m going to do whether I’m gonna keep it in the case or whether I’m going to maybe put up some sort of pegs and keep it hanging because that’s ugly.

GRETCHEN HASSE: That’s three days too?

JESSE GREIST: No. This is months because I haven’t been able to clean that because it’s a felt material, and so if I wipe it down it will never dry.

GRETCHEN HASSE: Wow.

JESSE GREIST: So yeah, this is a disaster. I’m probably going to have to get rid of the case at some point.

GRETCHEN HASSE: So, you’re keeping the mandolin in there?

JESSE GREIST: Currently, I’m -- When I transport it, when I carry it, it’s still the easiest way because it’s got the handle and I’m usually walking with four or five different instruments. I think the most interesting thing for me here has been learning how to walk around town with six different instruments attached to my body in the mist.
