Moog Little Phatty Stage Edition
In this vid from the show floor of Winter NAMM '07, we take a long look at the Moog Little Phatty Stage Edition and its new features, including pitch sample and hold and oscillator calibration (aka tuning) via software. The calibration time can be lengthy, taking many hours.
Which is why another feature exists: you can choose the MIDI note range for calibration, a useful feature if you don't have time to calibrate the full range of notes.
MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE: So this is the Stage Edition of the Little Phatty which is just coming out, and...

...and it’s very similar to the Tribute, and it’s got all the classic sounds...
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...but it’s coupled with really cool new things that we’ve added and that’s exactly on both on the Tribute and the Stage is that we have added some new modulation kind of features.

So, that’s just straight pitch knob. Now, in preset mode, let’s see here.

For now, for instance, now we’ve added a sample and hold.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
We have a new nice feature. We’ve also added a noise feature which is pretty well demonstrated by this one.

Some of the other things we’ve added, we’ve got some nice -- Let me go back to this “Thank You Bob”.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
Right now, we’re modulating the filter with the LFO.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
But if I want to modulate that with the sample and hold...,
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...you can find it here.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
You can get some really interesting sounds out.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING ON THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
Now, another really cool thing we’ve added to the new software is the ability to auto-tune and calibrate your instrument manually. So, I don't know if you can see the tuner over there. If I go to a calibration preset...
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE CALIBRATING AND TUNING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...and I go to our main panel. We’ve got a tuning mode and...
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE CALIBRATING AND TUNING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...I can use encode to actually tune this guy right to concert pitch. Now, you know that analog synthesizers have a tendency -- They’re very, very stable but like if there’s a huge -- Let’s say the sun all of the sudden came out on an outdoor gig and the temperature changes, if you’ve tuned your synth, we can now put it in auto-tune, and you’re going to see that it’s going to tune itself exactly to that pitch. And now when you play your synth, the synth is going to keep itself in tune, so now when I go to play...,
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...so now if I go and look it to one cent, you see it’s totally locked on. Now, it’s wobbling a bit because I got modulation on it and two oscillators, but --
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
So, that’s a real neat new feature, the ability for an analog synth to automatically tune itself. Now the other aspect of that is that we’ve added a calibration feature so that you can auto-calibrate your synthesizer. In the old days, you get -- there were like about 10 potentiometers you had to adjust internally. You had to send your synthesizer to the shop. Well now, if I want to do a note calibration, this process takes about two hours to do but it’s going to automatically tune itself, every single note, every single octave setting. So right now it’s tuning oscillator 1 and it’s at MIDI note 0 at the 16’ setting which is really sub audio, so if you turned it up...
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE CALIBRATING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
...you hear it’s just kind of clicking away there, but as it goes up the scale you can see that it is automatically tuned. It saves all that -- It saves in a lookup table in the synth so that -- So now your synth -- You can recalibrate your synth whenever you want. It’s not something you would do often but it’s a very neat feature.
So, basically, you know, you still got all your classic.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
You can get really some cool sub frequencies there.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
Now, one neat thing about this is I can adjust the rate.
[MOOG MUSIC REPRESENTATIVE PLAYING THE MOOG LITTLE PHATTY]
So, right now I’ve got a sample and hold. If I adjust the frequency of that, I can get into -- I can start audio modulating and get some really cool effects.
