NAMM 07: MF-107 FreqBox Demo Video - New Moogerfooger Unveiled!
The FreqBox might be catagorized as a "guitar synth" by some, but after seeing this video, all will understand it is in a completely different league. On the surface The MF-107 is is an audio tracking oscillator. In standard Moog fashion the oscilator has a continuously variable waveform and frequency select. It can also operate on it's own and use the audio signal for modulation as well.
Of course there is no one better to explain it better than Cyril himself. So, watch the dang video already!
CYRIL LANCE: This is the latest Moog’s Moogerfooger: the FreqBox. This is developed by Steve Dunnington, one of our long-time engineers and developers, and the basic idea about it is that it’s a self-contained oscillator, and an oscillator can either free run it’s own frequency or it can sync to an external source like your guitar or synth or even a voltage source.
So, if just play just the oscillator, just by itself...

...just like any oscillator, you can change its frequency and its waveform. I’m going to turn it up so you can above the NAMM noise here.

So, there are different waveforms that goes from triangle wave to sawtooth to square wave. There’s the pure waveform right there, pulse width modulate -- pulses. So, I can modulate the frequency just by changing the frequency knob or with the foot pedal.

So, that’s just the straight oscillator. The sound source here you can see is totally...

...is completely unrelated to what I’m doing on the guitar, so you can get real percussive stuff. We can also have frequency modulation.

So that’s just the straight oscillator being modulated. We can also add an envelope.

You can change the amount of the oscillator.

So that’s just the oscillator now. So we could, if we wanted to tune that.

So that’s tuned, right?

So now I’m mixing the oscillator and the original frequency. Now, if I sync like in a classic...,

...so now I’m using this to actually sync the sound of the oscillator.

Now, we’ll just listen to just the FreqBox.

You hear the sync? So now I’m doing a lot of the syncing. As with all Moogerfoogers, you can add an expression pedal.

And so, it’s a pedal that you can use for an awful lot of things from just very pretty...,

...you know, just tricking an oscillator and --

Now, the nice thing about all Moogerfoogers is that they can be interconnected. So, you can use an LFO coming out of another Moogerfooger or any kind of control source to control -- You know, you can put an LFO into the frequency into your voltage oscillator so that you could, you know, have a waveform adjusting your frequency instead of my foot pedal.

And so, the interconnectivity of all these devices is what makes them so powerful.

I’m doing that by modulating the audio of foot here. That’s low frequency, high frequency, and I can change the amount of FM.

Now, just sound -- The amount of different sounds you can create out of this is pretty infinite.
