Moog Rogue: Old And Funky Is Part Of The Charm, Says Ólafur Arnalds
Ólafur Arnalds a former heavey metal / hardcore drummer from Iceland and multi-instrumentalist with musical interests as wide as his skill set, recently spoke to Gearwire about grand pianos.
In the process of making his latest recordings -- Found Songs -- he also borrowed a Moog Rogue synth and wanted to share with us his off-the-cuff opinions on that instrument.
Tell me about your Moog Rogue.
It's actually not mine, I've just been borrowing it for some songs on my new album (due spring 2010). I needed something really aggressive to double other instruments on a few songs, so it's mostly just running in the background.
What is the best single feature of this synth?
The saw oscillator. RRRRAAAAAAWWWRRRRRRRRRRR! Beautiful filters as well. I sometimes send other tracks out of my interface through the Rogue for some filtering.
Is there anything you would change about it or that you find troublesome?
There are definitely some troublesome things, but those just add to its appeal.
This [synth] is old and has dirty circuits. That makes it unpredictable and hard to control, which sometimes helps you create things you wouldn't otherwise make.
Compare it to other, similar products you have used.
Well, compared to a Minimoog, for example it's much more rough. The Minimoog is very smooth even when it's aggressive, but [the Rouge] can just blow your head off. The one I've been using is old and dusty as well, so that adds to it.
Tell me about what you use with it?
I've only used it plainly as a synth and then as a filter for some glitchy drum tracks. Pretty simple stuff -- just re-routing a track's output and sending it back in through the preamps for re-recording.
The new album is set for release in early spring, and Arnalds is starting to book some shows for that time.
