Moog Slim Phatty: Monophonic Modular Analog Synth Module Announced
Tired of settling for analog-emulating soft synths and filter plugins? Now you can easily add a dash of real Moog analog goodness—for a lot less than you might expect—with the new Moog Slim Phatty ($849 US MSRP).
The Slim Phatty is basically the analog, monophonic sound engine of the Little Phatty in module form. If you've already got a DAW, keyboard controller, or other MIDI sequencer, the Slim Phatty just became the most affordable way to enter the world of Moog analog synthesis. Even if you don't, the Slim Phatty can generate some nasty noises and sweep tones, and thanks to clever I/O design it makes an awesome-sounding analog filter for external audio. At 17" wide and shipping with a universal power supply, it's the most compact, portable synth Moog has ever produced.
Check out the rear connectivity on this thing:

You've got Audio Out, +4dBu line level Audio In, Pitch CV In, Filter CV In, Volume CV In, Keyboard Gate In, MIDI-over-USB, and a Headphone Out. MIDI In, Out and Thru jacks are located on this guy somewhere, too, but we couldn't locate them in any of the provided pictures. The rich CV I/O makes the Slim Phatty a great quasi-modular add on for use with other Moog units. MIDI-over-USB turns it into an outboard hardware synth / effects processor with time-synchable arppegiator function.
The front panel of the Slim Phatty offers expressive, real time control over its two oscillators, envelope generator, filter section and modulation section. A bevy of buttons allow for instant adjustments of numerous parameters like LFO routing, wave form, octave and filter type, and each rotary pot is assignable to any parameter in the Slim Phatty sound engine.
In short, the Slim Phatty means real Moog monophonic synthesis and filtering and quasi-modular expandability in the smallest, most affordable Moog package yet. What's not to like?
