Moog Music Taurus 3 Bass Pedal Synthesizer: Trippy In Many Ways

January 15, 2010
Moog Music Taurus 3 Bass Pedal Synthesizer Video Winter NAMM 2010

We've been stoked to catch a glimpse of the long-awaited Taurus 3 Bass Pedal Synth from Moog, so we hopped over to the Moog Music booth at Winter NAMM 2010 as fast as we could. In all our hoppy excitement, we nearly took a header over the strategically placed floor synth. Only its signature low-freq klaxon kept us from trashing our video camera on the first friggin' day of the show. Take a listen to the sound that saved us thousands.

Amos is the last person you

Amos is the last person you want demonstrating a Taurus pedal. Awful.

Agreed...

Terrible presenter... it really seems he doesn't even know how to play pedals properly - hitting two at once.
Whatever - this is an awesome piece of gear and I can't wait for mine to arrive!!!

Return of a Classic Monster

By: SuperD2112 (not verified)

Moog has taken the classic Taurus to the next level and far beyond. You have to love a company like Moog for releasing this synth to it's faithful followers, given the instrument has a very limited market. Moog builds some of the finest gear in the world, and the new Taurus are an instant classic. As for Amos, he may not have the greatest playing chops, but the man is uber-smart, and one of the few genuine "Rock Stars" of the analog synthesizer world. I ordered mine over a year ago - the first week they were announced, and I can't wait for them to arrive. Great job Moog!

Demo with Feet, Please!

By: Anonymous Coward (not verified)

This is a foot-operated devise. Extensive use of hands to select banks, patches, & pitches implies that it's not foot friendly.

Also, does it have midi in/out?

Midi?

By: SuperD2112 (not verified)

Yes, it has MIDI and a USB port. They are simply using hands in the video demo to speed things along. There are 52 presets, all user-writable and foot selectable. Octave, glide and decay also have foot switches. The large footwheel on the left is for volume, and the one on the right can be assigned to control almost any parameter of the sound engine - it is very foot-friendly. cool idea, weak demo

As one who kicked bass on pipe organ pedals as a kid, I welcome a true kick pedal board for the performing seated keyboard player. I am much more interested in upright bass and electric bass sounds for live performance than I am oddity synth sounds or Moog traditions. Soooo, are there some appropriate sounds onboard for that, or do I have to lug the whole thing just to midi out into a bass module? Are the pedals velocity sensitive? Looks like the display is tiny LCD, need large bright display to be readable on stage. Less weird effects and a two octaves of keys instead of just one would make it a lot more usuable live. And what other use would there be for it other than live, as bass parts could be done more easily with fingers on a keyboard in the studio.

Man, this is 100% analogue, once you play it and you experience how the sound breath you will never get back to your samples of upright or electric bass. As the analogue sound is so rich, has so many sonic details. It is an equivalent of a traditional non-synth instrument like upright bass for example, not a good sample that is anyway only half way through.

Couple month after buying Minimoog Voyager I sold my Fantom X as I was completely bored by sounds in Fanton. Voyager widen my sonic horizons so much. I´ve ordered Taurus before Christmas, cannot wait the day I have it:))

Interesting that when analog

By: Anonymous Coward (not verified)

Interesting that when analog synths first hit the scene people tried to make them sound like acoustic instruments and stated they were too bland and artificial, now we are saying they are organic.

That being said, sweet Moses, that baby has some sound!

moog taurus 3 bass pedals

By: Bass Ace 5 (not verified)

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!! I will be buying a set of these as soon as possible. i had a set of Taurus 1 pedals years ago and thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread but you guys at Moog have totaly outdone yourselves this time! The apeggiator alone is worth it and the fact that you kept the original ANALOG sounds just put the icing on the cake for me. I simply cannot wait to get my hands (feet) on these babies. Thanks so much for making all of my wishes and dreams come true.
