MOTU DP Control App: Control Digital Performer Wirelessly
If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and MOTU Digital Performer (DP), you can now use your handheld to control DP software wirelessly, when you download the free MOTU DP Control app.
The new DP Control app allows Digital Performer users to control Digital Performer (version 7.2 or higher) over a wi-fi network using an iPhone, iPad, or third-generation iPod Touch. DP Control provides quick access to DP's most important transport and mixer functions for tracking, mixing, and live performance.
DP Control works in both landscape and portrait orientations; switching between orientations lets you hold the iPhone or iPad comfortably in one hand while using the other to operate the app. In portait mode, for example, you can hold your Apple device in one hand and operate DP Control by pressing buttons and swiping to new pages with your thumb.
The main advantage to getting this free app is that it provides wireless, multi-touch mixing within Digital Performer, so that you are not stuck to your computer's screen while working. You can operate multiple on-screen Mixing Board faders simultaneously with several fingers and for two-handed mixing, you can turn an iPad sideways and mix with fingers from both hands at once. Faders and other controls are large and easy to grab, according to the manufacturer, and more faders are accessible if you swipe left and right on the screen as you mix.
If you happen to make a change from DP Control on your iPhone, such as renaming a take or adding a marker, the corresponding DP project on the host Mac will be updated immediately, and vice versa. This two-way communication makes DP Control a seamless extension of DP, says MOTU.
DP Control features:
- Real two-way communication: changes made in DP Control are immediately reflected in DP and vice versa
- Editable time counter with selectable format, including real-time, SMPTE time, samples, and marker names
- Main transport control and many other transport-related Control Panel functions (click, count off, memory-cycle, and so forth)
- Page-controlled, scrollable mixer with animated, recordable pan knobs and volume sliders, plus level meters and peak indicators
- Solo, Mute, Record-enable, Play automation, Record automation, and Automation mode settings for each track
- Track list for the host DP project, complete with collapsable nested track folders and dynamically linked track organization that matches the currently open DP project on the host Mac
- Infinite undo, with the ability to step through the next and previous tasks in the host DP project undo history
- Marker creation and naming
- New Take, Previous Take, and Next Take functions that operate on all of the record-enabled tracks at once (essential for tracking drums)
- Take selection, by name, for individual tracks
- New Take, Delete Take, and Rename Take for the current take on any individual track
- Save function for saving changes made to the DP document
Available now as a free app, DP Control may be downloaded from the Apple App store. DP Control is compatible with any iPhone, iPad, and third-generation iPod Touch, and it requires Digital Performer 7.2 or higher running on a Mac on the same wi-fi network as DP Control.
