Apple Logic And Ableton Live: DJ Alex Zelenka Talks Hardware And Software
Back at Detroit's Movement 2008, we talk to DJ Alex Zelenka, a Chicagoan who emigrated to Santa Monica, CA. Alex talks briefly about his tour and the programs he uses to sequence and sample. Not surprisingly, Ableton Live and Apple Logic both make the short-list.
JOE VORTECH: Hey! This is Joe Vortech at Movement 2008 in Detroit for Gearwire.Com, and I’m talking to Alex Zelenka, a young DJ/producer from all over the place, and we’re asking him what are you doing here in Detroit this weekend, Alex?
ALEX ZELENKA: Well, me and a friend of mine from LA are currently on tour right now. His name is Bulimiatron. We’re playing here in Detroit, Chicago, and New York, and then we’re going back to Santa Monica, California.
JOE VORTECH: And what are you playing here in Detroit?
ALEX ZELENKA: Just an after-party right in the heart of the city. I don’t really have the information on hand.
JOE VORTECH: Yeah. Cool. So, you’ve had some new releases lately, right?
ALEX ZELENKA: Yeah. I’ve just had a few things come out on Beatport and iTunes. One release was on Prosthetic Pressings called Descendant which had remixes by Lee Curtis from Berlin. Another release I had was on Kompute Records called Zenith, which is doing pretty well.
JOE VORTECH: Roger all. So, how would you -- Well, if you don’t mind me asking, what kind of equipment do you use in your production? What’s your studio setup like? Do you prefer digital to analog? Analog to digital?
ALEX ZELENKA: Well no. I don’t mind you asking. I do a lot of stuff analog versus digital. We have a lot of hardware instruments like Korg and Juno, and then we use a PC to make sounds and master them. We also have dual Macs like G5 Pro and stuff like this. We like using Ableton and Logic, pretty good software.
JOE VORTECH: Do you use Ableton for sequencing or Logic for mastering or vice versa?
ALEX ZELENKA: It’s kind of like vice versa but both, you know. Like mainly Ableton is good for sequencing and Logic is good for making your samples.
JOE VORTECH: Cool. Sounds awesome. And how would you say that kind of specific Alex Zelenka sound?
ALEX ZELENKA: Well, I would if -- It just blows. I don’t really know how to generalize it.
JOE VORTECH: Fair enough. Cool. Well, thanks for talking with us Alex, and best of luck tonight and on your tour...,
ALEX ZELENKA: Thank you.
JOE VORTECH: ...and with your future releases, and this is Joe Vortech for Gearwire at Movement 2008.
