MR. BONZAI: [LAUGHING] And there’s quite a few people that have passed on in the book. It’s musicians. It’s some engineers, producers. Bob Moog, who I knew for many years, passed away just before the book came out. The book has been out about, you know, a year or so but most of the stuff is timeless, the material, the conversations with the artists.

I think, you know, I designed the book, there’s 160 interviews and there’s over 400 photographs. I designed it so that each two-page spread is a short interview taken from a longer interview with the photos, so that it’s in alphabetical order. It’s like, you know, A to Z. Frank’s at the back here, Stevie Wonder is near there. You know, I can tell you some of the people that are in here. Just flipping through is kind of fun.

Some of them aren’t all that well known. Bob Clearmountain, a very famous engineer, Harry Connick, Jr., Dr. John. That Dr. John is such a gas.

BILL HOLLAND: I bet.

MR. BONZAI: I really love his music [DOING A DR. JOHN IMPRESSION] and I love the way he talks about most [SOUNDS LIKE] deceptively about the roux stuff. [RESUMES TALKING IN HIS NORMAL VOICE] and there’s pictures of Dr. John performing, and Peter Gabriel who was here yesterday at the show, and there’s a picture of Peter and me looking at each other. And as you can see, Peter is starting to look more like me as the years go by, and Booker T. Jones, Al Cooper who’s at the show today and performing tonight. K.d. lang, she was great.

The book is called “Lunching with Legends” and k.d. took me out to lunch in a garden, a vegetarian meal at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. It was tres elegant and she was just beautiful.

BILL HOLLAND: This is all pretty awesome. It looks like there’s a lot of good information here for any artist looking to get into the brains of these legends.

MR. BONZAI: Yeah, especially people that are interested in the recording industry because these are people that are foremost -- But it’s a mixture of artists, musicians, engineers, producers. Yeah, I think that there’s lots of insights that, you know, would be a pleasant educational experience and, you know, I hope that, you know, people keep picking it up and buying it, and we’re going to sign some books here today, and one of the artists in the book is Suzanne Ciani, who is a pioneer in the world of electronic music and one of the few women who worked in that field and still does and kind of a new age icon. Every time I get on an airplane, it’s Suzanne’s music is playing to make me fly off in a pleasant way.

BILL HOLLAND: I think we’re going to be talking to her in a few minutes here, so let’s come back to here with you, and we’re here with Dr. Bonzai and --

MR. BONZAI: It’s mister. Mister. I just want to [OVERLAPPING]

BILL HOLLAND: Did I say doctor?

MR. BONZAI: Yeah. A lot of people do that. I actually -- The name came about when I worked in radio...

BILL HOLLAND: Okay.

MR. BONZAI: ...and when I did stage work as an MC, and I thought it would be fun to have people have to show me their respect to call me mister, you know, but you can call me whatever you want.

BILL HOLLAND: My DJ name is Mr. Automatic so I understand. It gets frustrating. [LAUGHING] Well, thank you again Mr. Bonzai.

MR. BONZAI: A real pleasure. Thank you for coming by and hello out there in the world of music.

BILL HOLLAND: And we’ll be back with more from AES 2007 with Gearwire.Com.
