Gearwire MVP Candidate Guitarstrummer Appreciates Overlooked Gear Like The Capo
Guitarstrummer is a Gearwire MVP candidate who is widely recognized on the Gibson forums. His advice not to mess with a guitar unless you know what you're doing applies tenfold to Gibsons - there's no reason to risk voiding that lifetime warranty. Still, he knows a thing or two about guitars.
What is your background?
I'm retired from the law enforcement profession after being injured in the line of duty.
How did you get started in music and what advice would you give to someone who just started?
I began taking piano lessons as a small child and played trombone in school. I started playing guitar in high school and although the piano and trombone are no longer a part of my music life, I have continued playing guitar as a hobby.
Who are your musical influences and what genre do you listen to most?
John Denver, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and the Kingston Trio have all influenced my music. I like listening to most music genres, but primarily listen to country, folk, and oldies.
What's your inspiration?
My main inspiration is to take one day at a time and to play what makes me happy at the time.
What's your motivation for helping people out on forums?
I remember back to the times when I knew nothing about guitars and I really appreciated the help that others gave me. I only want to give back a little of what I've been given.
What's your favorite piece of gear and why? What gear do you use?
A simple capo has to be my favorite, because I probably use it the most.
What are your favorite sources for gear-related information?
I get most of my information from various forum sites.
What's the best music related advice you've ever given?
Don't try to fix your own guitar, unless you really know what you're doing. You will probably only make it worse.
What's the best music related advice you've ever received?
Play what makes you feel good.
What's the best and worst thing about being a musician?
The best thing is that it gives you satisfaction. The worst thing is that most people will always seem to be better musicians than you are, which can sometimes be depressing.
What is the best and worst thing about online forums?
The best thing would have to be the many on-line friendships you make. The worst thing is when people make personal attacks.
What music-related topic do you think is most neglected on forums?
Technical advice on how to fix the many things that can go wrong with instruments or gear.
