MythFX Minotaur: A-MAZE-ing Analog Distortion

September 12, 2008
MythFX Minotaur

First out the gate from MythFX, the Minotaur is an all analog distortion / overdrive pedal that gets dynamic with anything from mild crunch to blistering high gain distortion.

Controls include pre-boost, gain and master volume knobs, and there is a three-way toggle switch that flips between Silicon, Germanium and Bypass clipping modes. The permutations of the arrangements of the knobs and switch make the available tonal range wide as canyons.

Bypass clipping mode (in addition to the pre-boost gain stage overdriving the second gain stage) produces copious amounts of distortion sans diode clipping. Soft and hard clipping are achievable through the toggle switch. When switching between hard and soft clipping modes, there is no major volume shift either.

The Minotaur is packed into a compact aluminum enclosure to save pedalboard space. It could almost be considered a miniature minotaur -- try saying that 10 times fast!

Fast Features:

  • 100% Analog Circuitry
  • Handmade in the USA
  • Compact enclosure is approximately half the size other commercial pedals (3.6" x 1.5")
  • Multi Gain Stage design with independent control knobs for amazing tone flexibilty
  • Master Volume control knob for monster gain at low volume
  • Three-Way Clipping selection for Hard, Soft, and Bypass modes (Silicon, Germanium, Bypass)
  • Powdercoated aluminum enclosure and rugged construction
  • Highest quality components throughout including Switchcraft Jacks, film capacitors, long-life pots True Bypass Operation (will not "suck" tone when bypassed)
  • Bright LED ON / OFF Indicator
  • Durable textured LEXAN graphics will not fade, scratch, or peel
  • Minimal volume change when switching between Silicon and Germanium clipping modes

My new main overdrive pedal.

The pedal is tiny, comes in a velvet pouch inside a box...when you first look at it you say to yourself "How the hell did Brian get the components into this little thing?" By the time you plug it in and kick out the first tone that's the last thing on your mind. The Minotaur replaced my main dirt overdrive pedal, it produces this super warm, very natural tube tone that is addicting. Then there's the switching between silicon-germanium or bypass clipping modes. This tiny box dishes out more overdrive, distortion and crunchy dirt tones than any other box out there. It takes up no room on your board and looks kickass. www.mythfx.com and go get one. I am stoked about Brian's new Midas Clean Boost...These will be pedals that are gonna do lots of work on many albums, mine for sure.
