NEUMANN REPRESENTATIVE: You want to look at purchasing a few really good microphones rather than purchasing a lot of okay microphones. It’s much better to start out with one really good microphone even for recording applications. If you’re talking about live applications, then you’re not necessarily going to look at starting at the top of the microphone food chain. For recording applications, since unless you’re going to be recording an entire band in a live format, you probably want to start with one really good microphone, get a really good sounding mix, and let the microphone pick up what sounds really good already rather than trying to fix it after the fact.

JOE WALLACE: now, for the KM D 184D, what’s the ideal use, the optimal use for this mic? Can you hang this over a drum kit overhead or are you looking to mic a cabinet or is this a vocal mic? For that type of musical application, what’s ideal?

NEUMANN REPRESENTATIVE: There isn’t really much you can’t do with a KM D microphone because of the interchangeable capsules. Neumann doesn’t really develop microphones largely for intended applications. We have a few models such as the BCM Broadcast Series and the new TLM 49, which was designed specifically for vocals, but traditionally and continuing into the future, Neumann microphones are flexible enough to be used in really any application, and it’s really a matter o being thinking like an artist and using the right paintbrush to make the right picture look the way that you wanted it to look.

JOE WALLACE: All right. Great. Thanks very much.

NEUMANN REPRESENTATIVE: Pleasure.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
