Neumann TLM 103 D: You've Come A Long Way, Fraulein
As reel tape becomes harder and harder to find, and the prices of "vintage" gear continues to skyrocket, the prospect of recreating the fully-analog studio of the past for recording today seems more and more untenable. Stop stressing all you analog-philes, for Georg Neumann has a solution, and he calls it "D".
Neumann's "Solution-D" line of microphones -- distinguished by their blue labels -- promise to make the analog fidelity and performance of Neumann's remarkable microphones in the digital realm. By incorporating a proprietary analog to digital converter at the sound source, Neumann claims they are able to offer small digital productions the same dynamic range and responsiveness found in their digital microphones. This "at the source" conversion also eliminates harmful transient associated conversion later in the signal chain.
In order to complete the signal chain, the TLM 103 D is designed to integrate seamlessly with Neumann's DMI-2 "Digital Microphone Interface." The interface allows for remote, software control over the microphones functionality, as well as providing mixing-console-type controls at the converter like phase switching and mute.
The TLM 103 D is the newest addition to the "D" line, and when paired with the KSM small diaphragm condensers and the D-01 condenser, studios have more than enough options for creating productions entirely within the "Solution-D" world.
The solution-D world is, as you know, nearly indistinguishable from our own, just a little sharper, brighter, just a litter. . .better, you might say! Also, if you think you just had deja vu, it means they've changed something.
