Neumann TLM103D Is The Belle Of The Digital Ball
At Neumann's Summer NAMM 2008 booth, we were forced to look at album after album of the TLM103D's baby photos. I mean, I know people get obsessive about their kids, but isn't the crazy supposed to subside a little after the fist couple offspring? I mean, the TLM103D is, like, the fifth mic in the Solution-D family. Get over it!
OK, so it is a pretty cool mic (as are the other Neumann digital mics), as our friendly Neumann rep describes.
ROBB BLUMENREDER: All right. Now we’re going to get a look at Neumann’s Solution-D technology. We have a new member of the Solution-D family and that’s the TLM 103-D. The TLM 103-D calls upon the now classic design of the TLM 103 but we put our Solution-D circuitry right into the microphone. What’s so special about this product is that we have the analog capsule and then right after the capsule we have our own Neumann patented A-to-D converter. So basically, you’re taking acoustic energy and then you’re transforming it into a digital signal and broadcasting via AES 42, which is the bidirectional communication method that is sanctioned by the AES.
The TLM 103-D, some of the advantages of having a digital microphone here is you don’t have to have any preamp circuitry. So, we have the microphone, it goes into an A-to-D converter, we have DSP built into the microphone, and there’s no need for any other type of preamplification. This allows you to capture extremely high dynamic range in the range of 127 dB, and the self noise on the product is extremely low because you’re not adding anything from external components like preamps or even any analog cabling. Of course you have an XLR connector on the bottom of this but the TM 103-D joins the KM D Series and also our concept card here, the D01, so we’re proud to introduce this new member of the family and looking forward to its introduction.
