Novation Launchpad: Ableton Live Controller Pisses Off Akai, Yamaha, Folks Who Bought An APC40

October 02, 2009
Novation Launchpad

Ableton Live has been one of those DAWs that have become a favorite among electronic musicians worldwide, offering live performance functionalities. Things such as creation of instant electronic music on the fly along with options for the use of virtual instruments all going on whilst in the middle of performing can be done seamlessly using Live. So much so is the fact that any respectable electronic musician with even just a decent laptop can create music on the fly and keep things going. Taking that step further for a more powerful "Live" performance, Novation and Ableton teamed up to design the ideal controller for Live: the Novation Launchpad.

Launchpad is an 8 x 8 grid of backlit buttons which puts the features of Live at the musician's fingertips. This surface takes control of multiple functions with the help of mode selectors that transport the user around Live's interface. The device is bus powered from a single USB connection. Everything that Live offers from launching and building up a song to switching to your favorite virtual instruments for that improvised solo break without ever touching your mouse or keyboard

GENERAL FEATURES

  • s
  • Dedicated Ableton Live Modes
  • Session Overview

This square controller is also equipped with rubber feet to ensure that the Launchpad stays in its place on the surface which it is placed. I WRITE music.. and it takes a lot of work

What Ableton has done.. is make MUSICIANS lazy... so we can sound instantly cool.
Novation has made a FISHER PRICE BUSY BOX for grown ups.

Ever since the advent of these loop machines.. EVERYONE sounds the bloody same. Thank god people like Stevie Wonder and men of that calibre still make music by hand.

Im not against using loops here and there..... for tinsel..... but cut and paste is not music making.... its playtime.. for non talented people

Cheer up, Sir -- it's an art

Cheer up, Sir -- it's an art like any other.

Quality isn't about the stuff you buy or the music you listen to: it's about talent, imagination, and hard work.

why are you upset? You're best bet would be to protect your life and not go walking down back alleys where mediocrity is stooped.

Honestly , Ableton does not

By: Rodsteel (not verified)

Honestly , Ableton does not make musicians lazy . It's just a creative tool like any other product out there in the music industry . These " FISHER PRICE" toys are made to make the creative process a little more fun and dynamic for some .

And please ,if you need to throw stones at a music program . You could not be serious by saying Ableton ....Try maybe Fruity Loops or Reasons.

art? anyone one can cut - paste and match BPMS

if its for IDEAS fine....... it makes musicians lazy.. trust me.

creativity does come from prefab toys.. it comes from a man a piano or guitar...... and from his depths bring forth MUSIC..... cut and pasting loops OTHER people have done is not making music.... its scrapbooking.

Like I say you can get IDEAS... and 'stumble-upons' .... great writers are not fooled by toys....if you make your OWN musical ideas. and want to trigger them with such devices.. fine. but merely mixing and matching pre existing music loops is not song writing. im sorry

Huh?

What about the electronic musicians that record their own sounds? What about the electronic musicians that use material that they themselves created entirely? What about those of us that actually do work hard to come up with cool music going so far as to even create new instruments and timbres (!) to use in our music? You think idiots like you are the only people who make real music? I guarantee you that my music is far more thought out, intricate, and artistically merited than any of your four chord pop crap. I spend hours on four-bar long sections of my music. You're a dick.

Seriously

By: Anonymous Coward (not verified)

I mean jesus.. this topic is about a product for Ableton...

Making good music.. that is quality for release is not easy.. yes anyone can push buttons and make use of this program..

And believe it or not.. many of us... program our songs from scratch.. by playing in on keyboards... and creating the entire piece.. we then break the track down into our own loops so we can play the song live with these devices..

I don't play a guitar.. I don't want to purchase a piano that plays one single sound... I mean seriously.. if you don't like electronic music... or how technology is going.. then why the hell are you on this forum saying that this isn't real music..

if it weren't.. then record labels would cease to exists.. there would be no income from these "non musician" players...

Clearly something is working because it is around and the technology keeps progressing... the simple fact is...

creating a dance song that is structure and sounds proper takes a hell of alot more time to learn to use the program... to play it live.. and to have it sound good..

To me... learning to play one specific instrument... and playing with a band is much much more easy than learning how to create every element of a track and put it together with one single person..

Clearly you know nothing about what it takes to write a proper good tune in these programs... and your argument is just the same argument of those not progressing with technology...

That's your choice.. and I know one single person that will not continue down your path!

NOT EVERYONE THAT USES THESE PROGRAMS JUST CUT AND PASTE AND USE LOOPS....man of us actually create our own loops with our own sounds... and manipulation...
