Novation X-Station And Ableton Live: The Livewire's Home Studio Setup

August 31, 2007
The Livewire Walks Through a Basic Ableton Live Studio Setup

The Novation X-Station is regarded by many as being a great controller, but for those on a budget, it offers a lot more. Granted, the preamps aren't on the level of something like the Focusrite Sapphire Pro, but for someone working with limited resources, it does the job.

For The Livewire, the Novation X-Station is the core controller and synth module for his studio. Running the Novation through a separate audio interface, he records loops into Ableton Live. Other key instruments include the Korg Microkorg, Theremin, Circuit Bent toys, and a Samson C03U for recording vocals.

THE LIVEWIRE: Hello there Gearwire. My name is The Livewire, and we are chilling in my studio, a.k.a. the living room of my place.

I have in the studio turntables, CD player, mixer, the production unit which consists of a PC-based laptop. Right now, I have Ableton Live loaded up with the glitch plugin, the lovely Novation X-Station which just is the powerhouse of this studio, and then all running through a Behringer mixer. I have a sound analyzer here which does wonders on the sound. We have the M-Audio speakers. If you look, scattered around, we have a couple of circuit-bent glitch toys that are very useful for sampling and getting that unique sound. We have a pair of Electribes, a BCD which actually works really well for doing some digital DJing which I actually only do in the studio because we have turntables for the real stuff. And then I also have a microKORG off in the corner that has a wonderful vocoder. The microKORG is actually used a lot lately, and you’ll hear it and it’s quite recognizable these days.

As I mentioned before, the powerhouse of the studio is the Novation X-Station. It performs as my recording unit, my synthesizer, my sound card, my little bit of everything. It’s got all the keys that I need.

And last but not least we have a wonderful USB condenser mic which records amazingly because I don't know if you can hear but there’s a fan on in the background. But when I sit in my studio right here and I record with this microphone, that fan will be on but you cannot hear it. You’ll only hear the vocals. It’s wonderful. It’s a great little piece. It is the Samson C03-U USB multi-pattern condenser mic. I recommend picking it up if you’re looking for a microphone. It’s actually fairly inexpensive compared to most that are out there.

So, that is my studio. Thank you for coming through.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
