ArKaos Grand VJ Software: Control Your Video With MIDI, Yo

June 25, 2008
ArKaos Grand VJ

Numark was displaying ArKaos Grand VJ software at Summer NAMM 2008, and it sure caught the attention of our video producers. It allows for video control to be performed using any MIDI controller, which might come in handy in a number of applications where you need to trigger on the fly, while you're multi-tasking with instruments.

FELIX “MEMPHIS” RAINES: Hi guys. My name is Felix with Numark, and I’m really excited to show you the new Grand VJ by ArKaos. This is actually the first video mixing software designed for musicians. Let’s go right in guys.

Do you see it right now? It doesn’t look like a video controller at all. I have an actual keyboard, an Akai MPK49. If you see my screen right here, on each key I have a video assigned, and then I have a whole mixing channel here. So, I have eight channels here, eight faders.

Let’s say I want to go to channel number 1. Once I mean channel number 1, I want to assign whatever sound that’s assigned to a key. If I have 49 keys, I can have 49 different videos that I can start switching from. So, I’m just going to grab one of the sounds that’s right here. As I press the key, I select it, and that’s the video that I’m showing on the main screen. I have an output, this is going to be your main output.

But let’s say I want to add a little bit of what’s on channel 2, I’m actually just controlling with faders. Now, I kill the first one and so forth. All I’m using to control these are faders.

You see, I have the keyboard mode right now and I also have a mic input. So actually, the sound is going to be picking up through music. A lot of people is going to be on as stage, maybe a DJ, maybe a band and how about a dedicated guy on the side playing keyboard but he does really play keyboards to trigger all video. You can add any content you want, you can tweak at anyway you want. You can get more complex as you go.

If you see, you also have your mixer mode and your keyboard mode. Right now, it’s on mixer mode because I’m just going, but if I was on keyboard mode, I can actually play right here, and when I press a key I start adding more and more videos as I play upon it.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
